5. Phonics
Through phonics, we teach children the difference between the sounds and names of letters.
There are 26 letters and 44 sounds
Alphabet; a-z
18 digraphs

6. Learning the letter name ‘S’ and its sound ‘sssss’
Action; weave hand like a snake and say ssssssss

7. Digraphs – two letters making one sound
sh, ch, th, qu, ng, ai, ee, ie, oa, oo/oo, or, er, ow, oi

8. This is called blending.
The children can then use their knowledge of these sounds to read and spell words The letters are introduced in a particular order. Children begin reading and spelling words after the first six letters have been introduced.

2. Trace over letter in different colour to practise formation (rainbow letters)
