1 Year 6 French – Asking Questions
Hiltinbury Scheme of Work, Autumn Term, Week 8

2 How many ways can you think of asking a question in English?

3 Did you get these? Say a sentence but raise your voice at the end.
Swap the verb and the pronoun around ‘Have you?’instead of ‘you have’ Add a ‘tag’ at the end, for example Perhaps? Isn’t it? Did you think of any more?

4 Here are three ways of asking ‘Do you have a cat?’ in French:

5 Which do you think is easiest? Which do you prefer?
Tu as un chat? As-tu un chat? Est-ce que tu as un chat? Which do you think is easiest? Which do you prefer?

6 Tu as un chat? As-tu un chat? Est-ce que tu as un chat?
In groups, try changing the words ‘un chat’ to ask other questions in French. Try your questions out on each other and then on your teacher. Tu as un chat? As-tu un chat? Est-ce que tu as un chat?

7 Here are three ways of asking ‘Do you like football?’ in French:

8 Est-ce que tu aimes le foot?
Aimes-tu le foot? Est-ce que tu aimes le foot? Look carefully at the English question: Do you notice an extra word in French? Do you like football?

9 Est-ce que tu aimes le foot?
In groups, try changing the words ‘’le foot’ to ask other questions in French. Try your questions out on each other and then on your teacher. Tu aimes le foot? Aimes-tu le foot? Est-ce que tu aimes le foot? Do NOT worry about answers at this stage (which will involve the word ‘de’ see Teachers grammar notes in the lesson plan) you are just looking at question formation.

10 Card game – you will each be given a card with either a question or an answer on it. When your teacher gives you the signal you must find your partner who will have the other half of your question or answer.
