2 Youth Sport Trust: Sport changes lives
Our charity is passionate about helping all young people to achieve their full potential by delivering high quality physical education and sport. YST is a charity that has used PESS to have an impact on achievement and attainment across the whole school to drive improvement. We have 20 years of experience working with schools across all KS including special schools. The programmes and resources you may have come across which are developed and implemented by YST are TOPS, C4L – these are clubs which are used to engage the least active whether it be in PESS or other areas of your schools development plan such as behavior and attendance. We also provide the development support for the School Games, which some of the children in your schools may have been part of from level 1 up to the Tees Valley school games at Level 3.

3 High quality PE and sport can be used as a powerful tool to improve our nations’ health, education and sporting prospects. YST are campaigning to government on your behalf to do these three things.

4 Outcomes Understand why Physical Education, Physical Activity and School Sport is important Be aware of new national strategies and funding streams Understand the requirement on your school at a local level Hopefully by the end of my presentation you be aware of and understand these three key points.

5 Current Picture Explain a couple of the key facts: 21% of boys and 16% of girls meet the min recommended guidelines for PA – Does anyone know what that is? Low levels of PA and aerobic fitness are associated with declines in academic achievement, cognitive abilities, brain structure, and brain function. One in three children who leave primary school are obese or overweight. Increased risk of developing mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.

6 Babies Brains video This video is aimed at new parents but it helps to explain why it is vital that we keep our babies and children active.

7 Physical activity can enhance attention and memory
We have numerous research papers that link physical activity to attainment and achievement, but without going into the research detila these brian scans show the effect of physical activity on your brain. After 20 minutes of sitting After 20 minutes of walking Hillman et al. (2009). Neuroscience,159,

8 The Impact of movement on child development
The brain controls everything that happens in our body, including conscious processes: thinking, reasoning, memory and emotions and unconscious processes too: breathing, digestion, balance and reflexes Brain development starts with movement The more movement the more brain connections are established and the more often the movement is made the stronger the connections become more established Read through Brain development at 3 years old

9 Physical Development Cephalocaudal we develop from the head downwards
Proximodistal we develop from the centre outwards to extremities

Implications for learning Gross motor skills develop first Fine motor skills second Shoulder mobility and strength impacts on ability to manipulate objects-pencils, pens, cutlery, buttons, laces

11 Implications for learning
Balance: Critical for learning Vestibular System responsible for: Posture Balance Alertness Concentration Stillness Vestibular system can be developed by; Spinning Rolling Hanging upside down Proprioception: Body’s GPS The vestibular system, in most mammals, is the sensory system that provides the leading contribution about the sense of balance and spatial orientation for the purpose of coordinating movement with balance.

Ofsted...or you will be aware of your development areas....may read like this! With a targeted intervention using PE and Sport Premium funding – impacted on young peoples writing.

14 To summarise: this slide shows the top ten reasons why government and schools should deliver high quality Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity.

15 Obesity Plan 2016 CMO guidelines and the introduction of the obesity plan in 2016 30 mins out of the 60 mins to be delivered in our schools every day for every child.

16 Implications for schools
We need to do more than just 2 hours of PE a week. We need to encourage children to be active every day. Every primary school child should get 30 of their 60 daily minutes of moderate to vigorous whilst at school, every day. The remaining minutes should be supported by parents and carers at home. Linked to Ofsted inspections. Linked to the new voluntary healthy schools rating scheme. New interactive tool will be available to help schools plan at least 30 mins of PA a day. Schools also have unique contact with parents and can signpost them to important advice and information on keeping their children healthy. Ofsted will do some thematic reviews on obesity, healthy eating and physical activity in schools.

17 Sport Premium Funding Current guidance
Must spend it on: Making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport. To encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Must not spend it on: Employing coaches or specialist teachers to cover PPA To teach the minimum requirements of the national PE programmes of study - including those specified for swimming

18 Costs: £8,000 per school plus £5 per pupil (for pupils from Y1-6)
Reporting on website by 4th April 2017: Schools should publish the amount of premium received Include a full breakdown of how it has been spent (or will be spent) Explain what impact the school has seen on pupils' PE, sports participation and attainment Explain how will the improvements will be sustainable in the future? Schools should also consider how their use of the premium is giving pupils the opportunity to develop a healthy, active lifestyle.

19 Sept 2017 onwards Sugar Tax to be invested into primary school sport
This will double the national Sport Premium funding to £320 million However, this does NOT mean you will all get double Guidance due imminently

20 Healthy Pupils Capital Programme funding
Education Secretary Justine Greening has announced that schools will be able to bid for a share of £415 million fund for new sports facilities. Available from 2018, the Healthy Pupils Capital Programme funding, recouped from the government’s “sugar tax”, will be delivered through a central formula to local authorities or multi-academy trusts who will make decisions on how it is invested. Smaller multi-academy trusts, standalone academies and sixth form centres will be able to bid for grants for one off projects. As a result of this, plans announced last year for funding for young people to access sports and arts opportunities during longer school days for secondary schools have been shelved. Sorry for the wordy slide. This was announced last week and I want to give you as much detail as possible.
