What Man Is This? “Behold the man” before Pilate! He is an innocent man. Judas declared Him innocent – Matthew 27:4

3 Matthew 27:3-4 (ESV) 3  Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4  saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”

5 Matthew 27:19 (ESV) 19  Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”

13 Matthew 27:54 (ESV) 54  When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

What Man Is This? “Behold the man” before Pilate! He is a brave man. Jesus had been beaten mercilessly. Few would remain conscious. Many would die. Pilate has an admiration for Jesus. Quote - Barkley, Gospel of John, vol. 2, 285 He is a majestic man. He is also God.

What Man Is This? “Behold the man” before the crowds! Pilate expected sympathy. What he got was an angry and malicious mob. The crowd feared their identification with Jesus. They recognized His sinlessness. The unsaved person’s heart will always oppose the truth and righteousness.

What Man Is This? “Behold the man” before the masses! Some still hate Him and try to destroy Jesus, His influence, and His good name. Most in our day simply ignore Him! Ten virgins Three servants Sheep and goats We are in a day of grace – 1 Corinthians 2:2.

What Man Is This? “Behold the man” before the masses! Some still hate Him and try to destroy Jesus, His influence, and His good name. Most in our day simply ignore Him! Ten virgins Three servants Sheep and goats We are in a day of grace – 1 Corinthians 2:2. Someday we will be in the day of judgment.

Who Died at Calvary? Charges against Jesus from Rome He threatened to destroy the Temple. Jesus was accused of being an evil doer. He was perverting the nation. He had forbidden Jews to pay taxes to Caesar. He was stirring up the people. He had made himself King.

Who Died at Calvary? Real charge against Jesus had been veiled. The seventh and central charge now comes out. “Son of God” – “in three days” This is linked to the first charge. Jewish rulers understood it clearly. Why else do they protect the tomb? “Because He claimed to be the Son of God.” Pilate says, “Behold the man.”

Application The next time we hear “Behold the man,” it will not be a life offered up for ours in grace and salvation, but a divine judgment! Will you see the King of Glory in His Divine Majesty bringing real life or the judge of your soul who brings death and destruction?
