4 Unit 8 Learning Aims After completing this unit you should:
Know the technologies required for an e-commerce system Understand the impact of e-commerce on organisations Understand the effects of e-commerce on society Be able to plan e-commerce strategies.

5 2.4 Security There can be a number of security issues or problems when setting up an e-commerce facility: Hacking – this is an illegal act to gain access important/private data Viruses – this is an illegal/malicious act to disrupt the operations of an e-commerce facility Identity Theft – this is an illegal act to gain access to customer details for impersonation and misuse

6 2.4 Security Firewall Protection – a virtual barrier around a computer/network allowing authorised programs to access data. Incoming data is allowed if it is legitimate. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) – a cryptographic protocol providing secure information on the internet. HTTPS –uses encryption and is usually used by website on the internet. Often used when customers are entering payment details on a site.

10 Legislation Starter Starter Activity Working with a partner:
Identify and explain why laws have been created and how they affect businesses? Identify what kinds of E-Commerce issues, events and actions you believe are covered by laws.

12 2.5 Legislation E-commerce is now regulated by a number of laws:
Data Protection Act (1998) – sets out to protect sensitive data in databases. All businesses holding customer information must register and state the data they plan to hold. Computer Misuse Act (1990) – sets out to prosecute those that hack or attack computer systems with viruses, etc.

13 2.5 Legislation Consumer Credit Act 1974 – protects customers paying for goods/services on credit. It also contains a ‘cooling off period’ so customers can change their mind within 14 days about something they have bought. Trading Standards – this is an institute working with customers and businesses to maintain “fair” trading. Ensures that goods/services are accurately described, priced and sold. Freedom of Information Act (2000) – gives customers the ‘right to know’ regarding any personal data stored about them.

14 2.5 Legislation Copyright Legislation (1988) – this protects all works such as art, music, writing and programming code. E-Commerce Regulations (2002) – sets out rules to ensure fair trading between e-commerce sites including; businesses providing contact details, all information is clear and precise, customer orders must be acknowledged and misplaced customer orders can be corrected.

18 3.0 Understanding the effects of E-Commerce on Society
Starter Activity: Working with a partner; research each of following types of e-commerce websites (try to find as many specific examples as possible): E-Tailers Existing Retailers Service Providers Manufacturers Consumer-led E-Commerce Entities Financial E-Commerce Entities

20 3.2 Social Implications of E-Commerce
E-Commerce has changed business practices around the world. One area that established businesses and brands have had an advantage is in trust and existing customer relationships. The main ‘issue’ with e-commerce is the CUSTOMER’S PERCEPTION OF ONLINE TRADING!!!
