3 Mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. With 86 million americans at risk for developing type 2 diabetes – prevention is the best way to combat this disease.

4 Key Terms & Definitions
a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Diabetes a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. 5 Types of Diabetes Type 1 Type 2 Prediabetes
Body does not produce any insulin. 5% of diabetes population Type 1 Body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin properly. 95% of diabetes population Type 2 Elevated blood sugar levels, but not yet diabetes level. Despite the knowledge that adopting a healthy lifestyle is the key to living longer and improving quality of life, America’s waistline continues to expand. More than one-third of Americans are now obese, a condition that contributes to the rising rates of type 2 diabetes.

13 WELLNESS MATTERS There is mounting research on the health benefits of physical activity and healthy eating. America is a buzz about wellness and for good reason. Research. . . Harvard University investigators found medical cost savings of $3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness programs and absenteeism cost savings of $2.73 for every dollar spent. An employer who launched a workplace pedometer-based challenge found that participants took 41% fewer sick days than non-participants; the employer estimated an ROI of $3.26 for every dollar spent on the challenge.

16 We know that people have the best chance of reaching their wellness goals when they’re championed and supported. The American Diabetes Association’s Wellness Lives HereSM initiative is designed to inspire healthful habits at work and beyond. It will help educate and motivate people to adopt more healthy habits to lower their risk for diabetes and their complications and other diseases. For some, it will mean fewer sick days and higher productivity. For others, it will mean looking and feeling better. For everyone, the result will be more empowered Americans who are better able to manage, control and prevent diabetes.
