Counts as two test grades Will be written in class over the course of two days Day one: brainstorming and rough drafting Day two: editing, revising, final drafting Will be written in formal standard English

The Five Paragraph Essay: Intro
The introduction paragraph will include: The title of the work Because Night is a nonfiction novel, it should be underlined. The author’s FULL name- Eliezer Wiesel The topic of your paper - THEME A thesis statement that tells me what each body paragraph will be about Make sure you mention these in the order in which they will appear in your paper.

The Four Paragraph Essay: Body
Each body paragraph should include… A topic sentence – What is THIS paragraph about An example of your topic, then a supporting quote A second example of your topic, a second supporting quote A third example of your topic, a third supporting quote. An explanation of what the reader can learn about this topic through these examples A conclusion sentence Including supporting quotes: “Your quote should be word-for-word from the text and inside quotation marks. At the end of the quote, there won’t be a period. Inside parentheses, you will include the author’s last name and the page number where the quote can be found” (Lastname 52). Make sure to have a lead in to the quote. The novel says, “....

The Four Paragraph Essay: Conclusion
The conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay. It will include: Your original thesis statement, rephrased (this time with the title of the work and the author’s name) A sentence (or two) about the topic of each body paragraph A closing statement or quote that leaves readers thinking about the theme and the story

Things to Remember Grammar and spelling are important!
subject/verb agreement She walks. They walk. Capitalize proper nouns; don’t capitalize common nouns. The boat sank and it was a terrible disaster. The Titanic sank and it was a terrible disaster. Don’t paraphrase anything from text when you’re directly quoting it.

Stay organized! Let your thesis be your guide! Follow the format in this PowerPoint. Make confident claims, not passive ones. In Elie Wiesel’s novel, Night, Weisel makes a series of choices that show he loves his dad. It seems like Elie loves his dad.

DO NOT USE FIRST OR SECOND PERSON POINT OF VIEW (unless part of a direct quote) I, me, my, we, our, us=OFF LIMITS You, your=OFF LIMITS This is not an opinion paper! I’m looking for direct claims and supporting evidence! Your goal is not to summarize the story; I’ve read it. You should be focused on applying the theme to the work and explaining how these things are connected, providing evidence to support your claims.

Create a graphic organizer of some sort to clearly arrange your ideas Gather all of your quotes from whatever story/stories you’ve chosen to write about Write entire rough draft Subject/verb agreement No first or second person I, me, my, us, our You, your NO OPINIONS/JUDGEMENTS Don’t summarize! Formal English No slang “Imagine this is a quote on page forty-two of the text and the author’s name is Snape ” (Snape 42).
