5 Student Placement Middle School teachers will use the ECRA readiness for High School success standards based test to identify honors placement for students in: English Language Arts/Literacy Math/Science Social Studies Case managers will use an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to identify which class students will be placed in for Special Education. If the second number if a 9 on the pink course selection, it is a class that is offered in the special education department. Do not select a course with ****** after the course name unless your son/daughter has an IEP and has been directed by their case manager to select the class. Cheryl to present this page

6 Math & Science Pairings
Ideally Algebra I would be paired with Earth Science Ideally Geometry would be paired with Biology (sophomore year Algebra II is paired with Chemistry) Ideally Geometry would be paired with Biology Advanced Studies (sophomore year Algebra II is paired with Chemistry Advanced Studies)

7 Rubric for Spanish I Vocabulary study skills and a strong command of English grammar are necessary The student needs to be able to grasp/understand vocabulary, spelling, and sentence structure in English If the student has difficulty grasping English concepts, it is difficult to understand Spanish concepts (the class will require a connection to be made between English and Spanish) Foreign Language is NOT required for HS graduation Cheryl will explain this slide

8 Recommendation Letters
Geneseo High School will mail a letter regarding course recommendations for the school year second semester based on the MS Readiness Assessment and current 8th grade course performance. The recommendations will be in the English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Social Studies If you request a full year of WHH and are not recommended for it, the request will be moved to 1st semester Ancient Civilizations and 2nd semester Western Civilizations Cheryl will explain this slide

9 Required Classes for Freshmen
1st and 2nd semester of English 1st and 2nd semester of Math 1st and 2nd semester of Science 1 semester of Health 1 semester of PE/DrEd 3 additional classes each semester (Study Hall can be requested each semester but study hall is not for a credit(s)).

10 Selecting Electives Classes with term “S1” meet first semester
Classes with term “S2” meet second semester Make sure you select both semesters of a year long course (i.e. English, Math, Science, FACS, Band, Choir, Intro to Ag, Spanish, etc.). Your course planning guide indicates whether a course meets for a semester or is a year long course. Do not select a course with 9 as the second number and ****** after the class name without teacher permission. Reminder – Study Hall can replace an elective for one semester or two semesters and must be requested. Linda V

11 Select PE, Health, Driver Education
1st semester* – DOB on or before February 10, 2003 request DrEd/PE 2nd semester* – DOB after February 10, 2003 request PE/DrEd Request Health Students will schedule PE/DrEd according to the DOB and Health according to the period and semeseter where it fits in with their other classes.* If you have completed driver education independently, please your student’s HS counselor Linda V

12 Blended Learning Non-traditional, computer based learning outside of the traditional classroom Student ownership of learning French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Latin, Geography and World Cultures High School credit earned, but no GPA impact Cost: $175 per course per semester Having an open period for blended learning is not required during the traditional school day. 13 Directions for requesting courses in Skyward
To begin the process, you will log onto the Family Access page using either the parent or student access (found on high school tab). 1. Choose “Schedule” (left side tool bar) 2. Click “Courses for high school” (upper right) 3. Find the classes you want to request using the worksheets you were given 4. “Highlight” each request and click “add course” 5. After 14 requests (can include SH) have been selected, log out (course requests will automatically be saved) Skyward opens on November 1 and closes on November 6.

14 Middle School Meetings
Friday, October 21 - Course Planning Guides and other handouts were distributed to 8th graders at the Middle School on Monday, October 24 - Parent Student Orientation – 6:30 pm in the HS Main Gym Thursday, October 27, Counselors will meet with the entire 8th grade class to answer questions about requesting classes. November 1-6 – Skyward open. Enter class request during this week. November 14 – Counselors will meet with students who may not have entirely completed the class requesting process Counselors will meet with 8th graders in the spring and provide the student with instruction on building their schedule Linda V

15 Due Date: Sunday, November 6
Skyward will open on Tuesday, November 1 at 8am. Complete your requests online before midnight on Sunday, November 6 Confirm your requests with your parent(s) or guardian(s) before you submit!!
