1 Year 11 Ahead Evening Welcome
Year Achievement Co-ordinator Student Support Officer

2 Year 11 Ahead Evening There is a powerful association between parental involvement and student achievement and attainment Parental involvement in the form of at-home interest and support is a major influence upon educational outcomes Department of Education Research We are in this together. The home-school partnership is crucial if we are going to help students achieve their personal best. Please feel free to contact subject staff if you have any concerns.

3 Attendance v External Target Grades – August 2016 The single biggest favour you can do for you child is to send them to school every day on time.

4 The Home Support Observation Push attendance and punctuality
Support school detentions and revision/coursework sessions Provide the tools for homework and revision – a quiet space and equipment Contact subject staff if you have concerns Attend parents’ evening (23rd February 2017) Show an interest in what they are doing There is always homework or revision to be done. Please check planners regularly (12-16 hours per 2 weeks) See an outcome Students should plan their time effectively – with ‘free’ time built in. Progress checks and mock results should provide a platform for discussion.

5 The School High Quality Teaching Input Extra Sessions Maintain Contact
Regular Checking of Progress Review/Teach Revision Skills Prepare Students for their Future

6 Revision Guides/Planners and Easter Revision
Every Year 11 student has been bought a Study Skills Guide and Revision Planner

7 Revision Guides/Planners and Easter Revision
We will be holding after school sessions starting after half term on Thursday evenings to help students organise their own revision Year 11 Form Tutors will be working on revision techniques during Tuesday registrations based on the Study Skills Guide The expectation is that all students revise for a minimum of 30 hours over the Easter Holidays

8 The Students Something to look forward to at the end of the school year. We have booked Bury Lodge in Stansted for the Year 11 Prom and will be arranging buses to transport the students from school to the venue. More details to follow in a letter coming out on Monday (parent mail and to all students’ school mail), but please put the date on your calendar. Our expectations of students have been set but here is a reminder…………. Friday 7th July

9 What you have to do… Residual = -0.5 or higher Subject Target Grade
Forecast English A B Maths Science Geography A* Food Technology C Music It effectively means you can be 1 grade below your target in half your subjects Residual of 0 – on target in all subjects Residual of -1 – one grade below their target in every subject The basic point is you should be on target. You will be shown your residual after each progress check and report

10 What you have to do Learner Score – Minimum of 2.2
Coursework – All finished on time Saffron Award – You must pass Attendance – Minimum 96% (unless we have medical evidence) Detentions – Maximum of 5 30 hours of revision over the Easter break But what if you fail to meet one of these conditions? You will be invited in for a meeting to discuss what is going wrong so that we can support you and rectify it. * Also 3 periods of isolation or a single suspension

11 Sixth Form Ms H. Cox Director of Sixth Form

12 Why think about post -16 progression now?
It’s important to have plans for post 16 progression. The plans will depend on forecast GCSE grades. This is the same wherever students apply, here or elsewhere. If students apply here (and we hope they will) they have the following options:

13 10 A*- B or more: 4 A level subjects of their choice.
5 A*- B: 4 A level subjects- limited choice 5 Cs: more limited choice of subjects- fewer subjects Some courses have particular entry requirements e.g. 7 in maths to do Physics fewer than 5Cs: level 2 qualifications (GCSEs) Not achieving 4s in Maths and English language- re-sits SWCHS Year 11

14 The better the GCSE performance, the more options students have!
SWCHS Year 11

15 Changes to post 16 Education
Linear A levels starting September 2017 in all subjects. Some subjects will have more demanding content and assessment, be aware of this when making choices. Maths and English grades 1-9 this affects the entry requirements for some subjects as well as resits (see prospectus)

16 Application process Sixth Form prospectus available now to download
And given out in school on Monday 17th November 2016: 6th form students in tutor time and assembly Taster activities in year 11 lessons Thursday 10th November 2016: Sixth Form Open Evening SWCHS Year 11

17 Application process 1st December 2016 :
Deadline for applications to Sixth Form January and February 2017: Guidance discussions for Sixth Form March 2017: Offers of places in Sixth Form- may be deferred SWCHS Year 11

18 What can you do in the meantime?
Consider strengths- e.g. course-work versus exam performance, essays versus short answer. How does this match to particular courses. Investigate courses, content and assessment: the prospectus and parental handbook are on the web site. Which subjects are needed for particular careers, courses or employment routes-Informed choices and university and careers websites A careers interview arranged via Mrs Raynor SWCHS Year 11

21 Mathematics Mr N Chamberlain
Director of Mathematics

22 A sticky grade Maths has and will always been seen as important. It is not only a qualification for courses in September 2017 but it will continue to be on application forms/interviews for most people’s careers.

23 Attaining the right grade
Maths GCSE is now so important it is even more crucial to achieve a top grade Below a 4 means further study and retake(s) Retakes are even harder work and therefore takes time and energy away from chosen subjects Don’t “settle” for a grade now and regret it later

24 Attaining the right grade
Most sixth form centres required an A at GCSE level to study maths at A level. This will be a grade 7. Students need to show this term they look like they will achieve that 7 for their applications

25 What can you do this term?
Equipment – prepare for the exam Check homework is being written into planner clearly Check it is being done Help build up a revision pack from homework feedback

26 Equipment Collins GCSE Maths Revision Guide and Exam Practice workbook, £3.99. Geometry sets in a tin:  £1.25 Casio fx-83 GT+ scientific calculators at £5.50. Wisepay

27 What can you do next term?
Make it a real mock! How to revise for maths: Complete a practice paper Mark it carefully (Edexcel) Identify 2-3 key areas to improve Work on these areas Start the cycle again

28 Support Ask your teacher- a willing department Mymaths (swchs, angle)
