What is a Placement? 48 weeks employment relevant to your degree
Normal employee terms & conditions Must include learning & development opportunities Wide range of organisations & locations JOB – not a placement or shadowing Normal conditions include salary and holidays Jobs will have some routine (eg me and photocopying your handouts) and some development – Michelle we’ve a new course to... Paid employment (£10k-£18k, average around £13.5k) Outline different roles Integral part of a sandwich degree – year in industry Differentiate Learn and apply skills Honours sandwich degree Use illustrations from current placements students – what are they doing?
5
Why do a placement? Placement Put theory into practice
Develop personal, professional and social skills Higher classifications awarded Higher starting salaries Increased success in finding your first job Stand out from the competition Earn some money When it comes to graduate roles – if you don’t have a placement what would you response to a question like... Can you give me an example of when...? Me – value of HR and placements Teaching at L6 – very obvious in the first seminar who went on a placement – they are more mature, confident, question, challenge, debate. Also has an impact on final degree outcome, 1 classification different in final degree outcome – is that because of the placement or just because they were more engaged students? SHU reputation as a leading provider of placement opportunities. Many of the skills you will learn are ones that are almost impossible to teach in a classroom setting. What sort of personal, professional or social skills do you think you might be able to learn and develop? Professional Skills Problem solving, Coping with conflict, Time management, Teamwork, Negotiation, Organisation, Reflection, Objective setting, Concentration (focus), Being aware Personal & Social Skills Communication, Self confidence, Assertiveness, Self motivation, Sense of humour, Self sufficiency, Respect, Understanding/empathy, Passion, Ambition David - placement at Boots The Chemist head office working on NPD. Got a graduate job as assistant category manager with Lloyds pharmacy group. He was a decent student but not a real high flyer academically. How much do you think his experience at Boots helped him get his job at Lloyds? Chris went back to Ronseal Marketing, Matt to Ping, Gayle to Birds Eye, Andy to Eddie Stobbart. Lucinda was on placement at Haribo. They have offered her 1.5 days a week during her final year and a permanent job on graduation

Destination of Leavers of Higher Education Statistics (2014/15 leavers)
DLHE takes place 6 months after students have left - so these are the most recent stats. We have included the link so students can filter as they like! Top level stat shows the difference a placement can make to final qualification - whether it is because placement students are more dedicated as they found themselves placement or whether the placement gave them better critical facility and the ability to work for 8 hours straight - who knows? Second set of pictures demonstrates the levels of jobs achieved by those who did and didn't do a placement.

- The Graduate Market in 2016 (page 5)
"Recruiters have confirmed that 32% of this year's entry-level positions are expected to be filled by graduates who have already worked for their organisations, either through paid internships, industrial placements or vacation work." - The Graduate Market in 2016 (page 5) "Almost half the recruiters who took part in the research repeated their warnings from the previous years - that graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations' graduate programmes. - The Graduate Market in 2016 (page 6) The Graduate Market 2016 Produced by High Fliers research Ltd. Of course you don’t have to stick with the GRADUATE job offer once you have completed your placement – but it must feel good to have the insurance there. Fast forward to applying for graduate jobs…how competitive do you think it will be for good quality places? You'll be competing with everyone in this room, plus similar numbers form other universities around the country. You'll all have decent A levels, and now a degree. How do you differentiate? (Research among UKs top 100 graduate employers)
8
Excuses for not ‘engaging’...
I just want to get the degree over with... It will still take 3 years study whichever way you look at it! If you’re really not enjoying it, then surely taking a break is a good idea? I want to share a house with my mates... For the next 8 years as you struggle to find a job? I can’t compete against the high flyers... You aren’t. We have students with all sorts of grades get placements! Then don’t. There are jobs out there for everyone in both large or small companies. Network and then there’s no competition... I’ll struggle to balance my studies and job this year with finding a placement... Surely it is even more of a challenge in your final year when everything counts towards your final classification? How about entering that year with a graduate role already confirmed? I’m scared... So is everyone else, even if they’re pretending not to be! I have loads of money and a year earning a wage doesn’t really appeal... Call yourself a student?

Finding Placement Opportunities
Student Placement Portal Employer Presentations Placement Provider Fairs Tuesday 25th October 2016 - Business & Finance Wednesday 26th October STEM - Wednesday 2nd November Events, Tourism, Hospitality & Food Thursday 10th November The Natural and Built Environment Careers fair Finding your own Placement Starting your own Business Be careful – Virgin Media – didn’t turn up to the placement interview – name went around the company – deliberately not invited for a graduate role interview because of this behaviour Teresa's Tip: Good idea to attend Graduate fairs and ask about placement opportunities - usually employers refer to this as their "Graduate Talent Pipeline". They want people to work for them as graduates especially those with existing knowledge of how they work from a placement role. Attending Grad fairs is a great way to demonstrate how motivated you are. Remember often employers are looking for students with "ANY" degree discipline so don't rule out Graduate fairs that aren't called "Business Fairs".
10
How do I find a placement?
You will be invited to the student placement portal by one of our placement administrators. Follow us on Twitter: @SHUplacements Check out our placements blog: Visit the Careers & Employment Service at SHU Talk to family and friends Use the internet to search for placements i.e. Are you working PT, is there an opportunity to work FT time at your existing role?
11
Please feel free to insert your own linkedin profile instead, if you don't have one, delete this box and leave Michelle's there. Your online profile is now more important than ever. An incredible 95% of graduate employers featuring in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers for 2015/16 used social media in their recruitment activity, while smaller companies are increasingly likely to advertise their vacancies only across their social platforms.
12
Can I look for my own placement?
Students find their own placement each year It needs to be approved as a suitable Credible company Job that offers CPD potential/linked to degree You will be safe About 40% of students find their own placements through family, networking, socialising, other websites (think though that other websites have a lot of users, your family network is tougher, more persistent and potentially has better links. Lots of students each year are proactive in finding their own placement, particularly if they've got a clear idea of the type of industry or geographic area they'd like to work in. If there is enough interest we will run a special workshop with tips and advice about finding your own placement. - Teresa - Employability Advisors are happy to provide a workshop centrally for this. We just need to know there is a demand for it. Also we can offer one to one support on speculative job search etc.
13
What if I've got a business idea?
If you're interested in running your own business, please speak to: Helen Parkin Placement Student Support Officer Tel No: Teresa - Enterprise is now part of the Careers and Employability Service - So we can ensure there is a session provided on PYES and students can book in to see an Enterprise Advisor for one to one support and can access the drop in service which runs on a weekly basis during term time (Wednesdays from 5pm no need to book) if they want to gain advice and develop Enterprising ideas.
14
Your placement support
Treat your employability modules seriously! In the class room At any time via the SHIP Employability Team Careers Service/Employability Advisors Available to contact anytime via SHIP Academic and Professional Advisor Process to be confirmed Please advise the students that their employability module might not be called their employability module!!!!!!! APA hours - different teams are using their advisors in different ways - either in module supporting employability or with one to one meetings... Your Placement Employability Tutor for technical/industrial knowledge
15
What Do I Have To Do? The onus is on you to find a placement (but you will get as much help & support as you need/ask for) Be prepared to broaden your search geographically Check the Student Placement Portal regularly for news, information and vacancies Apply for jobs you are genuinely interested in, which are related to your course Attend all invited selection events. If you can't make it or have since found a job, politely withdraw by letting the employer know, because you may want to work for them in the future! When you accept a placement, immediately contact all other companies you have applied to and politely withdraw your application We can’t do the application/interview for you. Try and narrow down your applications better to do 5/6 well than 20+ generic Moving from home could be a good idea If you really want one and spend the time, effort, and get up after rejection – then you are very likely to get one. Those that didn’t get a placement lost their momentum. Can’t promise. Use the support Ignore the blockers eg We are signing up for a house; my mum does my washing, my part time job. When you have the job – as soon as you can gracefully withdraw from the other opportunities (as you may want to return to the company in the future). Don’t play employers off against each other – bad for uni, bad for you, bad for your industry profile.
16
Managing Expectations
It will take time and effort throughout the year Standard applications are a waste of time Resilience and perseverance are great attributes You will be rejected and it will hurt Make sure you learn from it Get feedback from the company Get advice from tutors Make the next one even better

Teresa - Employability Advisors can provide help and advice on disclosure and support students on how to explain any adjustments you may need in a proactive and clear way to potential employers. We can also help you to identify "two-ticks" / "Disability Confident" employers who are positive about employing people with a range of disabilities.

Teresa - Feedback from August 2016 from a student with a Disability who we supported:
"I have had 4 interviews before but I never felt this confident about any of them that I feel about Gxxxxxxx, this is down to the practice interview I had with you guys and for which I am really grateful".
38
Not disclosing - May also mean students struggle unnecessarily with assessment centres or Psychometric Tests that are not appropriate for them, if you disclose they can be amended to ensure they are suitable for you.

If you have attended interviews at two companies and are offered a position at one company but would like to work at the other, you may delay accepting a position for 48 hours to see if an offer is forthcoming from the second company. If this does not happen, you are expected to accept the first offer. If a placement offered to you is significantly different to the position that you applied for, you may turn down the offer. It is possible that a company may have two positions and, rather than lose you, they would offer you an alternative position to the one you applied for. If you do choose to withdraw your application, please do so immediately and professionally. All students who have secured a placement must contact the other organisations to which they have applied and politely withdraw their application. It is particularly important to do this quickly if you have accepted an interview at a company. Students should only formally accept placements that they sincerely intend to take up.

What some of our previous placement students thought…
"I definitely increased in confidence & maturity" "I have made some great contacts for when I graduate" "I've now got a lot more to offer in the business world" " I would advise students to treat it as the start of their career not as just a part of their course" Career not course powerful comment Start building your Linkedin network from the beginning – not just with employers but customers, suppliers, competitiors...

My Placement Experiences
Achievements... skills development and career aspiration My name is... My placement was at... I wanted to do a placement because... When did you secure your placement? Were you worried about leaving your house/course mates? How did you cope with rejections? How did you cope as others were getting placed throughout the term? This might help your placement reps think about what they can share. We recommend though asking each of them about key messages they want to share including stories of their placement experience/achievement. If you can - use something like Socrative to give students an opportunity to ask questions of the reps via their mobile phones. How many interviews /assessment centres did you attend? How much time spent per application? How many placements did you apply for?
