As an English teacher, I am particularly happy to see so many of the new year 7s enjoying reading and asking for recommendations in the library. It will make all the difference to the years ahead. The new year 7s have been a dream to teach. They are enthusiastic, kind and keen to learn. The new year 7’s enthusiasm and drive for learning is really encouraging. From the start, so many of them have shown such a willingness to work hard and an independence of thought that makes them great to teach.

My Vision: TO DEVELOP THE WHOLE INDIVIDUAL.
I want to help our students develop a vision of success that is not limited to just grades and work in the classroom. I want to encourage and help our students develop awareness of their own character. I want them to be the best they can be in EVERY way and in their own INDIVIDUAL way.
18
Three things we would like you to take away to support your child.
Whole Person 3 1 2
19
Whole Person Develop reading and writing opportunities at home to enable your child to develop the skills for engagement in learning. Create a period of time for your child to read every night. Get your child to learn a new word everyday, expanding their vocabulary Open up their imagination, creativity and passion for the written word. Develop numeracy opportunities at home to enable your child to develop the skills for engagement in learning. Get your child to learn and practise their Times Table by heart. Help your child engage in Non-Calculator Maths activities. Encourage your child to take up new opportunities. Encourage your child to express their own opinions and question the world around them. Encourage your child to be mindful of others, opinions, feelings, beliefs and cultures. Encourage your child to pursue their passions outside of school, e.g. sport, music, languages.

Literacy at Mayfield School
32
What is literacy? "... the set of skills which allows an individual to engage fully in society and in learning, through the different forms of language, and the range of texts, which society values and finds useful."
33
What is the difference between Literacy and English?
Reading Writing Communication Skills that need to be developed in all curriculum areas so that students can manage the particular demands of each subject and develop communication skills for everyday life. English Specific subject Responding to novels, plays, poetry and non-fiction texts.
34
Literacy is a skill for life
Each year, a lot of our children start their secondary school two years behind in reading. Literacy is about people’s ability to function in society as private individuals, active citizens, employees or parents... Literacy is about our students’ self-esteem, their interaction with others, their health and employability. Literacy is a skill for life
35
Good Literacy raises standards
Did you know that in England, students gain marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) in GCSE exams other than English? In History, Religious Education and Geography 5% of the marks are awarded for these aspects of writing. Even in subjects where students are not marked on technical accuracy, in a change to the previous system all subjects use much longer examination questions which require students to structure and organise their extended responses. Students with good literacy skills make progress compared to those who don’t.
37
EVERY TEACHER IS A TEACHER OF LITERACY
What we do to promote literacy EVERY TEACHER IS A TEACHER OF LITERACY
38
This can be found in all your children’s exercise books
To have a consistent approach to literacy marking across the school, we have a Literacy Marking Code which is used by all teachers. This can be found in all your children’s exercise books
39
This can be found in the students’ planners.
We have also created a literacy Placemat which is used to help students when they are writing extended pieces of writing in most subjects. This can be found in the students’ planners.
40
Reading for Pleasure Drop Everything And Read
To encourage a reading culture, our students read for pleasure every Friday during registration across the whole school. They are also engaged in the Accelerated Reading Programme. Drop Everything And Read
41
We have a Literacy focus every term.
We encourage critical thinking skills through Exploratory Talk. This involves students discussing a particular topic in a subject in pairs or groups.
42
To promote accurate spelling across the school, we hold an Annual Spelling Bee contest for Year 7 – 9.
43
We celebrate

45
What you can do Encourage your child to work on Kerboodle spelling, grammar and punctuation as well as reading and writing activities at least 3 times a week for 10 to 15 minutes. Make Literacy (Kerboodle) a family activity. Ask your child to write down the words that they always misspell and create a spelling list. Test them on these frequently. Check your child’s book frequently and read the feedback given by teachers and ask your child to browse Kerboodle to find an activity that can help them act upon the teacher’s feedback.
46
Have a dictionary and thesaurus in your home.
Encourage your child to look up words that he or she doesn’t know in the dictionary and have a vocabulary book where he or she records all the new words they learn as they read. Have a literacy night where you read with your child. Boys love reading comics, magazines and non-fiction texts. Play word games such as Boggle, Scrabble, Articulate, etc. These will improve your child’s spelling and vocabulary.
47
Why literacy across the curriculum matters
48
Reading at Mayfield School
49
We all want our children to achieve the best grades they can possibly get………
…but we don’t always know how to support them with this.
51
A computer-based programme that helps teachers and students track and improve reading comprehension
52
Students take a STAR Reading Test
Students take a STAR Reading Test. The test assesses their reading age and their reading level range (ZPD).
53
Each Accelerated Reader book in the library is labelled with a ‘Book Level’. Students choose books to read from within their ZPD range.
54
Minimum time recommended by Renaissance Learning
Time to read Students should spend a minimum of 15 minutes reading per day.
55
Once students have finished reading their book, they take a book quiz that tests them on their comprehension of the story and characters.
57
Students collect points based on the book quizzes passed
Students collect points based on the book quizzes passed. The Accelerated Reader programme records the points and the estimated reading time per day. They should work their way up the book levels to become a better reader – and their teachers can track their progress along the way.
58
Reading at Home Parental involvement in a child’s literacy has been reported as a more powerful force than other family background variables, such as social class, family size and level of parental education. Children whose home experiences promote the view that reading is a source of entertainment are likely to become intrinsically motivated to read . Children are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued.
59
Work with us in encouraging your child to read.
Take your child to the local library or bookshop and allow them to choose their own books Ask your child what they are currently reading – discuss their interests Set aside at least half an hour of family reading time at home – make this a routine Remind them to take Accelerated Reader quizzes as soon as they have finished reading a book
60
Our highest achieving Year 9 students are reading more than 20 minutes per day.
61
If you have any questions about students’ reading or the Accelerated Reader programme, you can contact me at
