2 In 1840 she married Prince Albert of Germany.

3 Victorian period Queen Victoria became the symbol of Britain's success in the world. How did Great Britain become powerful and successful? - industrial development (steam powered machines) A car

4 - scientific and technological progress (the invention of the telegraph and the telephone)

5 - the London Underground was opened (1863)

6 - elementary education was compulsory and free for all children (1870)

7 Victorian society There were three different social classes:
- the aristocracy - the middle class (upper and lower) - the working class (the poor)

8 In middle class families, life for children was very strict: Why?
They couldn’t do anything without their father’s permission. The mother was responsible for the house and for her children’s education (private education at home)

9 In working class (poor) families life was very difficult:
How did the poor live and work? They lived in small and dirty houses, in dangerous districts. They worked in factories in bad conditions and with low salaries. Women and children worked to get some money home. No public education for children.
