The Active Job Seeker Dilemma
Passive vs active job candidates 71% of HR professionals say that employee referrals are the best resource for finding candidates. 79% of HR professionals believe passive job seekers become the most effective employees. What employers are looking for in new graduates Internship experience: 23% of job seekers and 24% of HR Cultural fit: 15% of job seekers and 24% of HR GPA: 12% of job seekers and 6% of HR Internal mobility is key for retention 40% of job seekers reported that it was difficult or very difficult to make a lateral move at their most recent organization. Only half of job seekers say that their most recent employer helped them advance in their career. Empower your recruiters to network and engage talent who are already employed. Communicate to college career advisors what your needs are for graduates so that they are better prepared for interviews. Embrace career mobility, and intrapreneurship, in order to retain your best employees. Make it easy for them to find a job within your company so they don’t have to look elsewhere. The Gig Economy Recommendations: Focus on the flexible, specialized skill set that freelancers offer, as well as their ability to team with in-house employees. Promote flexibility to all employees and freelancers in order to meet their needs and retain them. Recent Grad Preparedness: 87% of workers feel well prepared for their job upon graduation from college. 50% of managers feel that employees who recently graduated from college are well prepared for the workforce. The top skills that recent graduates lack Problem solving (60%) Attention to detail (56%) Communication (46%) Ownership (44%) Leadership (44%) The best emerging skills: Scala (22%) – scalable programming language Go (20%) – open source language by Google Apache Hadoop (12%) – open source software framework for distributed storage iOS SDK (11%) - software development kit by Apple Big data analytics (11%) These skills are the most commonly possessed by workers at each professional level. Embrace new technology, such as virtual reality, but don’t let it get in the way of interpersonal relationships at work.
