4 Journey to Agile Integrated Infrastructure
Modern Data Center Environment: Elastic, Scalable, Efficient, Fast Traditional IT Private Cloud Off Premise Cloud Native Apps Core Apps Elastic Capability Cloud Core Apps Elastic Capa-city Cloud Native Apps Servers Storage Networking Power & Cooling AGILE INFRASTRUCTURE Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Virtualization & Converged Infrastructure Orchestration & Automation Flash Burst Flexible Self Service On Premise Hosted Private Cloud Public Cloud

5 All Flash Storage Cost of Flash per IOP is far less than spinning disk solutions Cost of Flash per TB can be less than spinning disk solutions given the efficiencies many storage vendors use on all flash arrays Cost of raw flash per TB expected to be comparable or less than spinning disk within the next 12 months Flash brings most value to random workloads, and can bring a whole new level of user experience to today’s demanding applications Flash

6 Benefits of Flash Storage Arrays
Concerns around data layout and constant performance tuning are eliminated, simplifying planning, implementation and management of the storage tier Datacenter resources in rack space, power and cooling are drastically less than spinning disk solutions Many vendors are now optimizing their storage Operating Systems to take advantage of Flash, while keeping all of the enterprise capabilities IT relies on every day, such as snap shots, clones and replication Flash

7 The overall infrastructure problem – not solved…
While we have a much faster storage tier now, the pain points associated with planning, installing and managing a multi-tier infrastructure are still there We still have to use the “Crystal Ball” to predict what our multi-year growth will look like to ensure we have a storage platform that will scale as needed We still have multiple management points, constant construction, and have likely created yet another silo with our flash storage array… Flash

8 HyperConverged Infrastructure
Significant departure from the 3 tier infrastructure model Software defined resources built on commodity hardware – appliances with set compute, network and storage resources End result functions the same as a shared resource infrastructure But one of the biggest causes for pain points in today’s datacenter, the monolithic storage array, is eliminated Hyper-Converged Infrastructure

9 Converged vs. HyperConverged
Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Converged Infrastructure: Built on traditional 3 tier infrastructure components Packaged and sold as a solution with cooperative support Upgrades may be packaged as a single upgrade, instead of upgrading each component Hyper-Converged Infrastructure: Built on entirely software defined components Sold in appliances which are clustered together for a scale out model Upgrade entire software stack including storage and hypervisor

10 Software Defined Storage
The Software Defined Storage creates a large pool of shared storage using the disks in each appliance. As data comes in, it protects it across two or more of the appliances, meaning that a whole appliance can fail, or be removed, without data loss. Management of SDS is greatly simplified compared to traditional storage arrays. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Virtual Shared Storage Pool VMs Storage Each Appliance is responsible for running Virtual Machines, Networking and Storage. Since all layers of the infrastructure are combined into one cluster of appliances, it is considered “Hyper-Converged” Snapshots, Clones Replication, Encryption Dedup, Compression

11 Granular Scale as Needed
Scale up vs. Scale out Traditional storage arrays scale up, which places demands on the planning and acquisition to ensure the right product is selected. The acquisition ends up being a large capital purchase to support multiple years of growth. Software Defined Storage can scale out, meaning you only need to purchase what you need for the current project. As capacity and workload grow, SDS scales with additional nodes to meet the demands. Scale Up Workload Time Buy up front to match projections Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Scale Out Add as needed to match workload

12 Hyper-Converged Infrastructure
Faster Time to Value Pools Policies Profiles Boot from SAN Traditional Infrastructures take potentially months of planning prior to even an install, and can take weeks to even months to install. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Switch Configuration Zoning WWNs Controller Configuration HA Cluster RAID Tiering LUNs Masking As Hyper-Converged solutions can be sized to current needs, reducing planning time, installs typically take days or even hours.

13 Simplified Operations
Traditional Infrastructures need multiple tools to manage the multitude of layers they are built with. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Trouble shooting Provisioning Upgrades Refreshes Provisioning! As Hyper-Convergence collapses the many layers into a scale-out appliance model, management is drastically simplified as well.

15 Hyper-Converged Infrastructure
Use Cases VDI: Easily scale to meet demands of increasing desktops. ROBO: Datacenter-in-a-box with simple implementation. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Datacenter: Consistent and predictable cost, effort and performance to scale environment as needed, project by project, while providing the performance and data protection for: Enterprise Applications Private Cloud Big Data Collaboration

17 Hyper Converged Infrastructure Compared

18 Orchestration Orchestration
Most customers in this region work are NOT looking for self service portals and chargeback models (true private cloud). There are tremendous benefits to automating tasks to ensure standardized processes which reduce errors and make IT more responsive to the business. Orchestration Consider the complexities of automating tasks in a traditional infrastructure – in reality, automation is very inherent in Hyper-Converged Infrastructure, as resources are software defined, and ALL resources are virtualized.
