Timeline Complete registration form tonight Student Information packet with important dates sent home in May – Must be returned by June 9th. Moorpark High School has many extracurricular activities available to students Reminder: Must have a 2.0 GPA to participate in extracurricular activities. Quarter report cards are used for eligibility Important to be involved in the school and make a connection to MHS

9 What Does this mean? Course Level Descriptions (PG. 25)
Advanced Placement (AP) College level Courses designed to prepare students for the AP Exam given by College Board Pre Advanced Placement (PreAP) Offered instead of an Honors class and is designed to prepare students for the rigor of an AP course. Outstanding academic achievement is required College Preparatory (CP) Courses which meet the entrance requirement of the UC/CSU Systems (A-G) and most other Colleges & Universities Honors (H) Courses which meet the A-G requirements and offer an in-depth coverage of the subject. 10 CLASS CREDITS 2 Semesters = One School Year
6 Classes Per Semester (30 Credits) Each class is worth five credits Credits given for a grade of ‘D’ and above 230 Credits Required for Graduation Colleges will only accept grades of ‘C’ and above

Must complete 40 Non-Profit organization May carry up to15 hours from Moorpark Middle Schools Need to be turned in to the middle school office

13 CSU/UC College Entrance Requirements “A-G Courses” (pg. 13-14)
A. History/Social Science – 2 years B. English CP – 4 years C. Math – 3 years (Must complete Math III CP) 4 years recommended D. Lab Science – 2 years (Disciplines of Biology, Chemistry or Physics) 3 years recommended E. Language other than English – 2 years of same language F. Visual/Performing Art- 1 year G. College Preparatory Elective – 1 year MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Grade of C or Better! Counselors will host several workshops in the fall to cover the College Admissions process – this is basic overview CSU = California State University System UC = University of California System Also = Private & out of state universities. Visual & Media Arts – Technology Industry Sector: Arts, Media & Entertainment Graphic Arts & Web Design Computer Graphic Arts (CGA) Advanced CGA or Web Design Career Technical Education (CTE) Support Programs Naviance: A college and career readiness software provider that partners with MHS and other institutions to provide students with college planning and career assessment tools (connection.naviance.com/mooparkhi) Get Focused Stay Focused: An interdisciplinary curriculum that involves students and teachers in an interactive learning process. It teaches critical decision making process for life-defining decisions and culminates in a 10— year Career & Education Plan that help young people envision productive life of their own choosing. Currently taught in History classes. (Pg. 11) Get Focused Stay Focused is taught in the Social Science courses each year

If interested in Pre AP, mark and prereqs will be checked. If applying to AVID – mark English 1CP & write AVID next to it We use 7th grade STAR scores since 8th not available Any student who meets the PreAP criteria AND signs up for the PreAP English/Bio classes, will receive an invitation to an evening meeting with the PreAP English & Biology teacher. We strongly recommend you and your student attend this meeting (April or May) so you fully understand the rigors of the PreAP program.

It is very important that students are placed appropriately for their math level New legislation has been passed that requires schools to look at several criteria for placement. All 8th grade Moorpark students will take the District Assessment test in April. The following chart will guide your decision

Exceptions: HSA (Application Required) Pre-AP (Meet recommended prerequisites)** **Pre AP Biology Recommended Grade Criteria: If currently in Honors Science: Must have ‘A/B’ grades all 3 trimesters of Science & English and overall core subject GPA of 3.5 If NOT currently in Honors Science: Must have all ‘A’ grades all 3 trimesters of Science & English and overall core subject GPA of 3.5 Students who are in the HSA Academy will be placed into HSA Biology. Special Education and EL/SDAIE students will be placed based on IEP and CELDT test scores.

30 Physical Education Physical Education (pg. 37)
Physical Education Sampler (pg. 37) Musical Show Production (pg. 48) – Involves after school commitments based around production schedules. Marching Band (pg. 49)- Must be co-enrolled in a Concert Band or Color Guard. Intermediate Dance (pg. 37) -Tryouts required **Tuesday, May 30th or Wednesday, May 4:00 PM In the MHS Dance Studio ( Room D-2) Athletics –Cannot place in Athletic PE class until MHS Coach gives roster to Counselor. Check Athletics web page for tryouts/summer schedule MSP – After school time commitment - Several weeks during 1st semester & more during 2nd semester. Sports team: Students who are interested in playing a sport, Cheer, Intermediate Dance (no 9th in Dance Sampler) during their freshman year must complete the Co-Curricular Participation Form and turn it in tonight. Students who do not pass Physical Fitness Testing WILL be required to stay in PE in 11th and 12th grade due to state testing requirements.

Freshmen take Health/CA History & Careers **Exceptions: HSA (Enroll in English, Biology & Health /CA History & Careers) MBA (Enroll in Health /CA History & Careers) If choosing to enroll in World Language AND Chorus Leadership-ASB Instrumental Music (not in Marching Band) **SUMMER SCHOOL = Health/CA History MHS Counselor approves We send paperwork to MS Counselors, they give to student Freshmen typically have room for ONE elective (World Language). If want space for TWO electives so they can take Chorus, Drama, ASB or Band…then must take summer school. Indicate this is your plan on Registration Form. Counselor will check that you meet eligibility requirements then send paperwork to Middle School.

32 List 2 alternate elective choices
Choose last class: Elective (Pg ) or World Language (Pg ) If choosing World Language: Requires a “C” or better in all 3 trimesters of English 8. Middle School Spanish 1 is not granted High School credit and will not be placed on the High School transcript. Alternates are very important in case 1st choice elective not available or don’t meet prerequisite for World Language Note Summer School Information! Refer to Sample Student Schedule Handouts

HEALTH /CA HISTORY & CAREERS ELECTIVE Your Registration Form should be completed. Any unmarked courses will be selected for you. All placement will be checked along with grades and teacher rec. Changes will be made as necessary. Any changes needed after tonight can be made on your copy & turned into your Middle School Counselor Don’t forget to turn in Co-Curricular Participation Form

34 FINAL COMMENTS GATE students will meet 2 times
All Counselors will stay after to answer all of your questions Please return the completed forms to the boxes Keep yellow copy! If you need to make changes Please make change on your yellow copy Give to MS Counselor. They will send to MHS MS Counselors are able to answer most of your questions If they do not know the answer they will ask us and get back to you. GATE students will meet 2 times per year with Counselors
