WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL STUDY IN ENGLISH Students will complete a GCSE in English Language and a GCSE in English Literature. English Language: 100% exam 0% coursework (Plus: Speaking and Listening Endorsement) English Literature: 100% exam 0% Coursework GCSEs will be graded 9 to 1, with 9 being the top grade.

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

GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE Section A: Reading – one literature fiction text (unseen) (25%) Q1 – List 4 things (4 marks) Q2 – Use of language (8 marks) Q3 - Use of structure (8 marks) Q4 – To what extent do you agree? (20 marks) Section B: Writing - descriptive or narrative (25%) Q5 – One extended writing question (24 marks for content, 16 marks for technical accuracy) Section A: Reading - one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text (linked but unseen) (25%) Q1 - True or false (4 marks) Q2 - Write a summary (8 marks) Q3 – Use of language (12 marks) Q4 – Compare how the writers present ideas (16 marks) Section B: Writing - writing to present a viewpoint (25%) Q5 - One extended writing question (24 marks for content, 16 marks for technical accuracy) Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing - 1 hour 45 minutes – 50% of GCSE Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives - 1 hour 45 minutes – 50% of GCSE

THE ASSESSMENT CONSISTS OF TWO UNTIERED PAPERS. PAPER 1 (40%) SHAKESPEARE AND THE 19 TH CENTURY NOVEL 1HR 45MINS SECTION A SHAKESPEARE: STUDENTS WILL ANSWER ONE QUESTION ON THEIR PLAY OF CHOICE. THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO WRITE IN DETAIL ABOUT AN EXTRACT FROM THE PLAY AND THEN TO WRITE ABOUT THE PLAY AS A WHOLE. SECTION B THE 19TH-CENTURY NOVEL: STUDENTS WILL ANSWER ONE QUESTION ON THEIR NOVEL OF CHOICE. THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO WRITE IN DETAIL ABOUT AN EXTRACT FROM THE NOVEL AND THEN TO WRITE ABOUT THE NOVEL AS A WHOLE. PAPER 2 (60%) MODERN TEXTS AND POETRY 2HR 15 MINS SECTION A MODERN TEXTS: STUDENTS WILL ANSWER ONE ESSAY QUESTION FROM A CHOICE OF TWO ON THEIR STUDIED MODERN PROSE OR DRAMA TEXT. SECTION B POETRY: STUDENTS WILL ANSWER ONE COMPARATIVE QUESTION ON ONE NAMED POEM PRINTED ON THE PAPER AND ONE OTHER POEM FROM THEIR CHOSEN ANTHOLOGY CLUSTER. SECTION C UNSEEN POETRY: STUDENTS WILL ANSWER ONE QUESTION ON ONE UNSEEN POEM AND ONE QUESTION COMPARING THIS POEM WITH A SECOND UNSEEN POEM. ALL ASSESSMENTS ARE CLOSED BOOK: ANY STIMULUS MATERIALS REQUIRED WILL BE PROVIDED AS PART OF THE ASSESSMENT. ALL ASSESSMENTS ARE COMPULSORY. ENGLISH LITERATURE

Section A Modern texts (20%) (An Inspector Calls) One essay question from a choice of two. Section B Poetry (Anthology ) (20%) One compare question on one named poem and one other poem from the anthology cluster. Section C Unseen poetry (20%) One question on one unseen poem and one question comparing this poem with a second unseen poem. Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel - 1 hour 45 minutes – 40% of GCSE Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry - 2 hour 15 minutes - 60% of GCSE

HOME LEARNING/ADDITIONAL SUPPORT. Additional Support Students will be offered a range of additional support: Plus One sessions after school (focusing on key areas) Morning intervention sessions (during registration) One-on-one support with class teacher/English Co-ordinator Catch up sessions Individual/group sessions with English Mentor Home Learning Students will be set weekly homework to consolidate work covered in class. There are also links on the English page of the school website to help students make progress. These include: Specimen papers GCSE pod revision activities

What can you do to help? Encourage your child to read a range of different texts at home and spend time discussing them. Keep an eye on developments on the school website Encourage attendance at all extra sessions. Check on SMHW to see if your child is recording and completing homework Keep in contact with your child’s English teacher
