WHAT IS FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE? BY CAROL CANNON

Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language.

A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object is PERSONIFICATION. The sun was smiling down on the field of daisies.

The repetition of the same initial letter, sound, or group of sounds in a series of words is ALLITERATION. Alliteration can be tongue twisters. Example: She sells seashells by the seashore.

The use of repetitive vowel sounds is words close together in a sentence or poem is ASSONANCE. Do you like blue?

An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe the statement is true is HYPERBOLE. Tall tales are hyperboles. It's raining cats and dogs!!

PERSONIFICATION, ALLITERATION, ASSONANCE, HYPERBOLE, KEEP YOUR EARS OPEN, WE HAVE A FEW MORE TO GO!

The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound or the sound made by an object or an action is ONOMATAPOEIA. (Say this: on-o-mat-ah-pea-ah) Example: Snap, Crackle, Pop ! Rice Crispies!

A simile uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike. My mind is like and ocean, it's as smooth as jazz.

The Metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison Metaphor is similar to Simile but be careful to leave out like and as. My mind is an ocean. My words are a river.
