4 History The Fritz Thyssen Foundation was founded as an independent non-profit foundation on 7 July 1959. Amélie Thyssen and her daughter Anita Countess Zichy-Thyssen created the foundation in memory of August and Fritz Thyssen. The Foundation is based in Cologne. It was the first major individual private foundation supporting science and research founded in the Federal Republic of Germany following the Second World War. 5 Statutes The sole aim of the Foundation is to provide direct support for science and research at universities and research institutes primarily in Germany, with a special emphasis on junior researchers.

11 Basic information Applications can only be filed by scholars from a university or a non-profit research institution in Germany or foreign countries Applications may be filed with the foundation by one or more applicants with a doctoral/post-doctoral degree The foundation generally does not accept any applications for projects if applications are being filed with other institutions at the same time to ease the burden on its experts assessing applications Further information on www.fritz-thyssen-stiftung.de Inquiries prior to filing in the application are welcome

12 Projects (1/2) The planned project should be limited in terms of the subject and time Informal application (except for a cover form; refer to website for download) Junior scholars can apply for their own post (except for the biomedical field) Deadlines for applications are usually: – middle of February (for the summer meeting) – end of September (for the winter meeting) (refer to website for exact dates)

13 Projects (2/2) The planned project can generally stretch over a working period of up to three years (2 years + 1 year) Personnel costs, research assistants and travel expenses Usually one entire position or two half positions based on the "Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder" (TVL) or equivalent

14 Conferences Small-scale expert meetings preferred Informal application Only resources (travel, accommodation and catering costs) for active participants/speakers can be applied for Deadlines: 28 February 31 May 31 August and 30 November Normally a decision is made eight weeks after each of these dates

15 Stipends The applicant should generally not have received his or her doctoral degree more than one or two years previously No stipends for doctoral dissertations or post-doctoral theses Application form can be downloaded from our website Applications for stipends can be submitted at any time An answer is generally provided within eight weeks

16 Travel Subsidies For short research stays in Germany or abroad No support for participation in congresses in Germany and abroad In addition to reasonable travel costs, fixed daily or monthly rates for defraying costs of overnight stay and meals for the respective country of travel can be applied for (for table of rates refer to our website) Applications for travel grants may be submitted at any time Normally a decision can be reached in eight weeks

17 Printing Subsidies Support for the publication of scholarly findings emanating from projects that have already been supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation No support to print dissertations or theses Form for a preliminary calculation and accounts for publications filled out by the publisher (refer to website for download) Complete manuscript submitted in pdf Applications for subsidies can be submitted to the foundation at any time An answer can generally be expected within eight to ten weeks

18 What we do not support Projects with a didactical focus Supplemental grants for scholarships or grants which are provided by other sources Translation work which has no connection to a support measure of the foundation Provision or supplement of institute budgets Exhibitions Charitable projects
