3 What is Inclusive Education? The child’s right to participate and the school’s duty to accept the child no matter what their background. Welcomes and celebrates diversity arising from gender, nationality, race, language, social background, level of educational achievement, disability, etc.

4 WHAT IS THE REALITY OF INCLUSIVENESS AND DIVERSITY IN EDUCATION IN SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE? -Creating inclusive school cultures (building community, establishing inclusive values); -Producing inclusive school policies (developing the school for all, organizing support for diversity); -Evolving inclusive school practice (orchestrating learning, mobilizing resources)

5 Key questions Do schools have a clear understanding of inclusive education? Why? What role are school leaders playing in fostering an inclusive culture? What are the practices in place with regard to inclusive education? What works? What are the challenges? Existing practices of professional development of school staff

6 Key questions Existing practices of school self-evaluation, monitoring How much education is focused on individual needs and interests of each individual learner Do individuals with different abilities learn in same environments as other peers How much priority is given to literacy development in early school years and teaching Does organizational culture of the schools promote diversity

7 Methodology Three working groups Chose rapporteur! Study questions individually and note 2-3 examples of good practice from your school/community. Note one challenge that threatens the development of inclusive environment in your school/community. Coffee break Agree on most striking examples and discuss it further.

8 Our action steps (afternoon) What can be done so that schools promote diversity? How to reach the vision aspired to, starting from situation where we are? Are there other steps that we need to think of for reaching the results we want? What school practices can be changed? How? What are the processes that actors need to engage in? How can school organisation and leadership help in developing inclusive practices?
