A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat. Also Biomes are very large climatic regions that contain a number of smaller but related ecosystems within them.

Is a cold and largely treeless biome that form a continuous belt across northern North America, Europe and Asia. Trees do not usually growth in the tundra because the winters are long and extremely cold and permafrost prevents their roots from penetrating far into the soil.

Location As it stated previously Tundra is located in northern North America, Europe and Asia. The region has extremely cold climate. There is very low diversity. The season of growth and reproduction is short. The drainage here is limited. The vegetation structure is simple. Characteristics

There is a short growing season in which is 6 to 10 weeks and there are long, cold, dark winters that last 6 to 10 months with temperatures below 32 degrees F or o degrees C. There is low precipitation with strong winds in less than 5 inches per year. In summer, wet Tundra is marked by large shallow lakes. Here seen from the air in the approach to Barrow, are lakes that are elongated perpendicular to the prevailing winds. These lakes are on the order of a kilometer in length and just a few meters deep. During the winter (most of the year), the lakes freeze and the areas is covered with snow.

Artic Fox – Caribou – Ermine.

Shrew- Harlequin Duck - Musk Ox.

Polar Bear – Snowy Owl

Usually in the tundra organisms do not have to worry about competition; the tundra is too big and not many animals can survive against the harsh climate. However, an example of competition could be between a musk ox and a caribou. When food is hard to find musk ox and caribou might have some competition trying to get something to eat. Might be hard to find a musk ox fighting for a sedge with a caribou, Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes An example of predator-prey can be Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes. The Polar Bear eats the Arctic Fox for energy. The Arctic Fox eats other small rodents to obtain energy

Caribou are members of the deer family. Their thick fur coats have hollow hairs. This helps to keep them warm. They move across the Arctic in large herds. Caribou eat moss, lichens and green plants. For the winter they go to the forests of the south where trees give them protection from the wind and the snow. In the spring the caribou leave the forests and go to the tundra where the calves are born. THE ERMINE ( least weasel, or stoat ) lives wherever it can make a den to raise its young and store its food. The den is in a pile of rocks or loose earth. When lemmings are plentiful, so are weasels. Although they depend mostly on lemmings for food, they are not afraid to attack an Arctic hare. The adult male is about 30 cm. ( 12 in.) long including the tail. The female is smaller. This animal is slim so it can go into lemmings' tunnels. The winter coats are white, and summer coats are brown. Ermine are fast, very brave and always hungry. When the ermine kills an animal it takes the food home.

One of the biggest threats to the tundra is global warming. As fossil fuels burn elsewhere on the planet, the atmosphere warms in all locations. This causes melting of permafrost, resulting in the collapse of tundra ecosystems. As permafrost melts, it allows frozen plant material to decay, releasing more carbon dioxide and accelerating global warming, according to Marietta College.
