1 THE PORT OF THESSALONIKI AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Eva Vafaki, Head of Environmental Unit of Th.P.A. S.A. 3rd IONAS PROJECT MEETING, THESSALONIKI SEPTEMBER 2005

2 It’s a typical Mediterranean city-port
Introduction Port of Thessaloniki The port of Thessaloniki belongs geographically in the Region of Central Macedonia, Greece It’s a typical Mediterranean city-port The Urban areas of the Thessaloniki complex extended behind the Port Zone

3 Port City center The city embraces the port, which is located to the west of the city center

4 THE PORT OF THESSALONIKI, GENERAL VIEW
CITY COMPLEX

5 6.200 meters quay length, sea-depth up to 12 meters
Total land port area:1,55 million square meters, Cargo Storage: m2

6 The Thessaloniki Port Authority s.a. serves:
Container cargo Conventional dry cargo Passenger and cruise traffic Liquid cargo (through private oil companies installations)

7 Environmental quality standards
On 23rd of October 2003 the Th.P.A.s.a. has been awarded the Port Environmental Review System certificate (PERS) The Th.P.A.s.a. is also a member of ECOPORTS network

8 According to the Greek and EU law the Th.P.A. s.a. has established:
“Waste reception and management plan”, for ships generated waste Hazard and noxious substances contingency plan Oil spill contingency plan

9 Environmental management plan
Th.P.A. s.a. developed three structured management plans in order to monitor and to evaluate the levels of: Noise Chemical agents Fugitive dust

10 Establishment of the plans:
Staff with permanent executive Protocol of cooperation with the “Sustainable Port” network of Aritstotle University of Thessaloniki on various research environmental issues Renaming the “Department of Health and safety” to “Department of Environmental Health and Safety”

11 Purchasing of the appropriate equipment and tools

12 Chemical agents Chemical agent Workplace TWA (ppm) Limit values ΝΟx
- Workshop (maintenance and repair of work machinery) - Gatehouses - Warehouses <0,5 0,58-1,45 <1,0 TWA NO2 5 ppm, NO 25 ppm Benzol Gatehouses Warehouses <20 TWA Benzol 0,5 ppm Petr. Hydrocarbons Workshop (maintenance and repair of work machinery) Ship hold On forklift <10 5-75 2 <100 TWA 300 ppm CO <5 TWA CO 25 ppm CO2 Container terminal < <1050 TWA CO ppm O3 <25 ppb ' Ethyl alcohol On dock <2,5 TWA 1000 ppm Chloroform <2 TWA Chloroform 10 ppm Carbon tetrachloride <1 ppm <0,5 ppm Phosphine Sacking Silo On hold <0,3 TWA Phosphine 0,3 ppm

13 The noise level is lower than 65(DBA) around the port
The main problem is the fugitive dust from the dry bulk cargo According to a survey carried out by the Espo, dust is ranked the forth main environmental aspect, under port waste, dredging and dredging disposal

14 Management of dust emissions in the port of Thessaloniki
Identification of the potential sources of dust: Cargo handling Trucks traffic Registration of: The type of the cargo The equipment used during the handling process The usual duration of the cargo handling and storage The way and the amount of the cargo storage

15 Application of a dust dispersion model
A three dimensional dust dispersion model was developed in order to assist Th.P.A. s.a.: To predict dust pollution levels To set up step by step plan to control, minimize and monitor dust emissions in port area

16 An un-calibrated application
The flow separation and the redistribution of the air stream around the buildings. Particles settled on the ground and the sea and trapped on the buildings’ lateral surfaces.

17 Actions and strategies to reduce emissions
Cargo storage into surrounding perimeters of four-metre retaining wall units

18 Spraying or covering of cargoes from which dust may be generated when being transported to or from the site Covering of the cargo piles with the dust sheets and/or tarpaulins for off-site material handling activities Watering cargo prior to being loaded into of unloaded from trucks

19 Use of hoppers or pneumatic conveyors

20 Regular sweeping of cargo handling areas
Providing means of environmental awareness and training

21 Thank you very much for your attention
