DAPL Dakota Access Pipeline

DAPL

Need to Know 1,172 mile pipeline, 30 inches in diameter Connecting the North Dakota oil fields to refineries across the Central US Will transport approximately 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day $3.78 Billion in total cost Creates 8,000 to 12,000 jobs during construction

Need to Know Estimated $156 million in sales and income tax generated Estimated $55 million annually in property taxes We are able to make US oil cheaper and more accessible so we don’t have to go out of the country for oil as much

DAPL’s promise “As an operating principle, Dakota Access Pipeline is committed to working with individual landowners to make accommodations, minimize disruptions, and achieve full restoration of impacted land. We will listen to and address questions from the community, landowners and other interested stakeholders about the project, proposed routes, landowner communications and more. It is our intent to live up to our promises of openness, honesty and responsiveness before, during and after construction and throughout operations.”

The Problem According to the Associated Press, “Construction crews destroyed American Indian burial and cultural sites on private land.” “This demolition is devastating,” Archambault said. “These grounds are the resting places of our ancestors. The ancient cairns and stone prayer rings there cannot be replaced. In one day, our sacred land has been turned into hollow ground.”

The Problem Basically it comes down to this, the US Army engineers gave permits for the building of the pipeline They did not fully assess the impact of the Pipeline on Federally recognized Indian land They also went off of boundary lines that are incorrect and that violated multiple treaties Due to the impact off oil on tributary rivers the protestors believe this to be an environmental issue

The Lawsuit The lawsuit says the reservation established in the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie “included extensive lands that would be crossed by the proposed pipeline. The Tribe has a strong historical and cultural connection to such land. Despite the promises made in the two Fort Laramie treaties, in 1877 and again in 1889, Congress betrayed the treaty parties by passing statutes that took major portions of this land away from the Sioux.” The lawsuit continues, “In addition to specific archaeological sites that have been identified to date, there are numerous significant culturally important sites that have not been identified. The lands within the pipeline route are culturally and spiritually significant.”

The Issues Oil Pipelines are not as safe as they lead you to believe Keystone Pipeline Leak in April Pipeline Incidents
