1.Turn to page 6 in your Spiral 2.Write the learning goal at the top of the page (small) 3.Write the following critical question below the learning target. The answer to this question will go on the top of the paper on page 5 How do scientists answer questions and solve problems? THE METHODS OF SCIENCE The Scientific method can be applied to ANY testable questions! NOT JUST SCIENCE QUESTIONS!

ANY TESTABLE QUESTION!! Why didn’t my boyfriend or girlfriend meet me after class? Why is there so much traffic around 7:00 in the morning? Why does an iPad block charge an iPhone faster than a smaller charging block? If I post a selfie on instagram in the morning it will get more likes. If I give Coach K some starburst will the amount of homework decrease? Why does my hair fall flat before 3 rd period?

1.With a partner sort the cards in the order you think is the scientific method 2.Leave them in that order! You’ll get time to fix it later SCIENTIFIC METHOD SORT

FOR EXAMPLE

Is a process that uses observation and investigation to gain knowledge about the world around us educated guess or testable prediction Science Hypothesis THE METHODS OF SCIENCE Experiment A procedure to validate or refute a hypothesis

FOR EXAMPLE

Part of an experiment that is purposely changed Independent – I changed Part of the experiment that is observed because of the independent variable; part of the experiment that is & measured IN EXPERIMENTS YOU WILL HAVE VARIABLES The part of the experiment that remains unchanged throughout The part of the experiment that remains similar in both groups

EXPERIMENT CONTINUED

1.Propose a question 2.Research (to become educated) 3.Form a hypothesis (educated guess) 4.Design and Perform Experiment 5.Gather and Analyze Data 6.Further Research (Was your hypothesis right or wrong?) 7.Conclusion

Well tested hypothesis that are explanations based on scientific experiments Ex: Cell Theory A rule or summary of theories that describe patterns in nature, but don’t explain why they happen Laws can be measured, theories cannot Ex: Law of Gravity Scientific TheoryScientific Law HYPOTHESIS LEAD TO THEORIES 1.Hypothesis is an educated guess or testable question 2.Theory is a well tested hypothesis that has been repeatedly verified 3.Law is a summary of multiple theories that describe patterns in nature

1.Fold the paper hamburger style 2.Write the steps of the scientific method AND your OWN EXPERIMENT EXAMPLE!!!!! 3.Write what the step is on the inside of the book 4.Then paste it into your spiral on page 5 FLIP BOOK
