2 Report Text Introduction Body – Problem – Solution Conclusions/Recommendations Should all add up to at least four full pages, single-spaced (or 1.15) within paragraphs, not counting visual 2

3 Introduction (about ½ page) Context—basic background information Purpose—what report is intended to accomplish Scope—what report covers (and perhaps what it doesn’t cover) Procedures—how report was compiled (especially how information was gathered). Limitations—problems, shortcomings, items not covered in report 3

4 Conclusion (about ½ page) Summary of Findings—summary of information about problem and solutions from body of report Recommendations—list of specific steps the reader should now take to implement solutions 4

5 Front and Back Matter Transmittal (memo, e-mail, or letter) Title page: (i) Abstract: ii Table of Contents: iii List of Illustrations: iv (for two or more visuals) Glossary: v (for terms unfamiliar to reader) Appendixes (survey/interview questions, etc.) Bibliography (Works Cited or References) 5

6 Visuals Include at least one visual in the text of your report. Give visuals titles and, if you have more than one, numbers (Fig. 1, Table 1, etc.). Refer to visuals in the text before the visuals themselves. Document any visual that is from a source 6

7 Basic Page Design Elements Type – 12-point type size – Serif font for text (like Times New Roman) Margins – 1” top and bottom, 1”-1.25” sides Spacing – Single-spacing within paragraphs (or 1.15) – Double-spacing between paragraphs and sections 7

8 Headings MAIN HEADINGS Secondary Headings Start text here, below the secondary heading. Subtopics: Then start text in the same line. 8

9 Editing Check carefully for errors – Sentence structure – Grammar – Spelling – Punctuation Read a printed copy. Read out loud. Go to the Writing Center or ask me for help. 9

10 Using and Documenting Sources Use at least three sources, secondary and/or primary. Quote or paraphrase correctly. Use parenthetical citation in either MLA or APA format. Include a correctly formatted Works Cited page (MLA) or References page (APA) that lists all of the sources you use in your report. Go to the Writing Center or ask me for help. 10

11 Other Reminders Review the Long Report Assignment. Review all of the unit PowerPoints. Review Chapter 11. Review the sample report and report components I passed out in class. Review the sample report in the text. Study for Quiz 4: – Unit PowerPoints and notes, Chapter 11 – Especially report components, research/types of sources, source use/documentation/plagiarism 11
