1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at BingInTheClassroom@Microsoft.com. You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. 3 The “M” in M57 stands for Messier. As in, French astronomer Charles Messier. But Messier wasn’t the first to spot it. That honor goes to fellow Frenchman Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix, who spotted this celestial body in 1779. Messier found it on his own just days later and plotted it on his chart – the 57 th object he’d cataloged on his map of the stars. We now know this cloud of ionized gas by the more descriptive name, Ring Nebula. The nebula as we see it is the result of a red giant star transforming into a more compact white dwarf. As the star’s evolution progresses, it spews various gasses into the space around it, creating a corona of wild color. What are the benefits to studying phenomenon in space?
