1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at BingInTheClassroom@Microsoft.com. You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. 3 How do you know if it’s a grasshopper on that leaf and not a katydid or cricket? Look at the antennae. Crickets and katydids usually have long antennae, sometimes longer than their bodies. But grasshopper antennae are short, sometimes even resembling horns. Most grasshoppers employ some type of camouflage to avoid predators, though there are many colorful exceptions among the 11,000 known species of these insects. Still, they’re popular prey not just for birds and reptiles; humans have a long history of eating grasshoppers, too. In parts of Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East, grasshoppers are an important source of protein in the diets of various cultures. Eating insects like grasshoppers is still rare among North Americans, but that may be changing. A growing industry is trying to introduce insects to American diets as an ecologically friendlier, healthy alternative to meat consumption. Would you eat a grasshopper? Devise a plan to introduce eating insects into the North American diet.
