You must score at least 80% on this exam to pass. You may take this exam as many times as necessary.

Pins and Pincushions Store pins in a pincushion when they’re not being used. Do not leave pins on the desktop Pins can get picked up by fabric, fingers or feet when we’re not looking Be sure to remove your pins as you sew on the machine. Don’t sew over a pin; it could break the needle.

Use a magnet to pick up any pins that may have fallen. Pins on the floor can be dangerous: – You could slip – They could puncture through shoes

Scissors Close scissors when not in use. Don’t leave them open on the desktop Hold closed scissors in your fist. Give them to others “handle first” Don’t run with scissors!

Embroidery Scissors are very tiny and very sharp. Keep them in the case when not in use. Fabric shears are very sharp. Use them for fabric only (no paper) Return fabric shears to case when not in use.

It’s Electric! Sewing machines are powerful electric appliances. They are plugged into the wall socket. Be sure the machine is in the OFF position when you plug/unplug it Unplug the machine by pulling on the plug, not the cord Pay attention to your work while using the machine. Distracted sewers can get hurt very easily!

Watch out for the take- up lever. It moves up and down very rapidly. Take care not to allow fingers near the sewing needle.

General Policies and Procedures Clean your work area when you’re finished. Store your projects in the cabinet assigned to your class. No snacks, eating or drinking in the sewing lab. Complete written work as assigned.

More General Policies and Procedures Remain seated at your machine. Allow others to work undisturbed. Conversation must be school-appropriate and may not bother other students. Work smart, follow directions, and get the job done right. You will not be given extra time to finish work.

Still More Policies and Procedures Remember, it’s not okay to throw or toss anything to anyone in the Teen Living room. Sewing is like driving: you control the speed with your foot and the direction with your hand. Most of all, have fun making your own creations!
