3. The Ugly Truths 1.Graduation requirements and district mandates permit less flexibility. 2. New Student Data System will prevent any June access to Student Requests and Schedules. 3. BHS will not be able to accommodate as many schedule change requests due to points 1 and 2. 4. Tonight’s purpose is to better inform parents of the registration process and importance of thoughtful, guided academic planning. 5. We don’t know details of what’s offered when or who teaches what until later….but when we do; refer back to #3!

4. First Class Ticket to ASPEN Positive Changes are Coming Due to KCS changing Student Data Systems from STAR to ASPEN the System will be offline all of June. Counselors are under time constraints to complete the Scheduling Process and must be available for Training on the New System, ASPEN, in the summer. Please use this registration process as a time for thoughtful selection of classes. Schedules will be released right before school. For information on schedule distribution dates please check our School Counseling Website or @beardenguidance.

5. Other points This is the same information we will share with your student on Feb 12 th. Over your student’s 4 years at BHS: – 9 TH 4 year plan review in English classes – 10 th 4 year plan review through small groups and Four Year Plans will be available online (Canvas) – 11 th classroom guidance and individual pullouts – 12 th college workshop series beginning August prior to the Senior year – Every semester, counselors review and update student progress

On the Cutting Edge Registering Online yellow9th Look for: green (11 th ), blue (10 th ) or yellow (9th) Registration sheets with transcripts the week of Feb. 12 th ALL GRADUATION INFORMATION & course selection options are on the registration sheets Review information with your student. Remember this is a thoughtful process. Students will first fill out their Course Selection Sheets then fill out an Online Registration Form Sign the sheets; sign the Academic Release (if needed for a Level Change) Course Verification Sheets will be distributed in April during Advisory. This will be the students one opportunity to review requested courses and to submit any necessary changes before schedules are finalized. This sheet is not sent home.

9. However, if a parent/guardian feels that such a change needs to be considered, a Request for Academic Release must be completed. If a student is requesting a level change both Online Form and Paper Course Selection Forms with signatures must be turned in to the counselor. Request for Academic Release forms may also be picked up at Bearden High School in the Guidance office or downloaded from the Guidance webpage at http://beardenhs.knoxschools.org/. The completed form must be submitted to the Guidance office for further review and administration approval. ACADEMIC RELEASE Academic data & performance records are used in placing students in the appropriate level of high school courses. If a parent or guardian wants to override a placement, they must read and sign this statement. We, the undersigned parents/guardian of _________________________(student name) give permission for him/her to enroll in _____________________________________(course/courses) at BHS. We are aware of the educational implications of this decision which do not agree with the recommendations made by BHS Professional Staff. We take full responsibility for this decision and understand that our student will be required to remain in the class until the end of the term.

11. Review What should students look for when reviewing their transcript? errors, progress towards graduation If any errors are discovered on a transcript, what should the student do? See their school counselor Can students change their Course Selections? Yes, students need to take advantage of the Course Verification Sheets distributed in Advisory in April to review and make changes. This sheet does not come home. It is for student review.
