2 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
OVERVIEW Introduction Why Internet via satellite? Internet via satellite – Two options Internet via satellite – how it works Anonymity & Pseudonymity Our Solution Anonymous data broadcasts - Our approach Sender Server Receiver Possible problems and approaches to solve them Ongoing and future work Questions Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

3 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Why Internet via Satellite? cover low-infrastucture areas multiple use of hardware e.g. for receiving radio and/or television Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

4 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Internet via Satellite – Two options One-way downstream via satellite slow uplink via terrestrial return (telephone modem/ISDN) low cost solution for mass market Two-way fast uplink via satellite very expensive Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

5 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Internet via Satellite – how it works user ISP server Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

6 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Anonymity & Pseudonymity Anonymity state of being not identifiable within a set of subjects (anonymity set) anonymity set: set of subjects with potentially same attributes In our case: Sender anonymity: being non-identifiable within the set of online ISP users Receiver anonymity: being non-identifiable within the set of households with satellite antenna (huge amount!) Pseudonymity State of using a pseudonym as ID Pseudonyms are identifiers of sets of subjects Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

7 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Identification on Sat-Broadcasts How is my data filtered out through the whole broadcast? unique MAC-address on each DVB-s card packets are „marked“ with MAC-address In our case: packets are marked with ID in HTTP-Header How can I see other packets than mine? promiscuous mode Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

8 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Our Approach receiver ISP sender server Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

9 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Sender generation of key phrase and ID private key cryptography AES cipher Implementation: Bouncy-Castle-API splits file(s) sends data and ID via secured connection to server Implementation: adjusted Version of Winie network utility e.g use of anonymous proxy service Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

10 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Server incoming upload from sender: incoming request from ISP: Implementation: based on Jigsaw-Webserver (completely written in JAVA) Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

11 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Receiver listening on ID in promiscuous mode Implementation: jpcap class package libpcap Raw Socket API knows ID and key-phrase joins parts together decrypt file(s) when complete Implementation: Bouncy-Castle-API Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

12 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Possible Problems and approaches to solve them high error rate packets could get lost undetected send packets several times control of transmission by sender linkability re-use of ID for several transmissions new IDs for each transmission Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

13 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
Ongoing and future works implemented key-exchange functions in software to analyse e.g. error rate Ruhr-University Bochum Chair for Network and Data Security

14 Anonymous Data Broadcasting by Misuse of Satellite ISPs
