Human Disease The beginning of health is to know the disease. Cervantes

Why Disease? Disease, like death and taxes, can not be avoided. Disease is personal. All of us will have to deal with some form of disease, be it as simple as the flu, chicken pox or something as life changing as cancer. It effects not only us as individuals, but our parents, our future children, our friends.

What are we covering?  What is an infectious disease? What are the mechanisms of disease?  How does it spread? What public health measures are used to prevent the spread of disease?  How does our immune system fight diseases?  How does it affect society?

A few of the infectious infectious diseases covered:  Plague  Small Pox  Ebola  Cholera  Tuberculosis  Malaria  Anthrax  Flu  Ezika Virus  Yellow Fever

Genetic Diseases  Genetic Diseases including: Sickle Cell Anemia, Turner’s Syndrome, Klinefelter’s Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Down Syndrome, Hemophilia, Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida

Diseases of your life:  These are the diseases that you are more likely to have contact with in the future with either your family, friends, or even yourself. Some of the diseases include:  Heart disease  Arthritis  Cancer  Parkinson Disease  Epilepsy  Alzheimer’s Disease  Diabetes

Grades  Grades are divided between Tests/Projects (45%), Classwork 40%), and homework (15%). There is no grade reduction for late work, but students only have 2 calendar days after the assignment is due to turn the late work in to me. If the student has an approved absence, the student has two calendar days for each day absent to turn in the work.

Homework  The following are the specific expectations for the completion and grading of homework in Human Disease:  Late work will be accepted to the end of the second school day after the original due date. After that grace period feedback will be given but no credit will be received.  Summative homework will not exceed 15% of a student’s quarter grade

Classwork  Classwork that is not finished during class will be finished for homework. These assignments will still be graded as classwork, not homework.  Any work assigned before student is absent is to be submitted upon arrival back to school.  Late work will be accepted to the end of the second school day after the original due date. After that grace period feedback will be given but no credit will be received.  If an absence is unexcused, the student will be allowed to make up the work and receive up to 80% credit.  It is the responsibility of the student to get all make-up work and make arrangements with the teacher to make up any missed tests/quizzes. Students will make an appointment with their teacher to make up assessments.

Absence  If the absence is approved in advance and/or if the work is assigned by the teacher in advance, all make-up work, including tests assigned for the day of return, is due upon the student's return to school.  If the make-up work has not been assigned in advance, for absences of one (1) to three (3) days, the student will have one day for each day absent. For absences exceeding three (3) days, the student may have two (2) days for each day absent to make up work. Special consideration will be given in the case of extended absences due to injury or chronic illness.  Any work/test assigned before student is absent is to be submitted upon arrival back to school

 It is the responsibility of the student to get all make-up work and make arrangements with the teacher to make up any missed tests/quizzes. Students will make an appointment with their teacher to make up assessments.  A history of all work assignments for each class is kept on by the assignment board. A list of test dates is also written on theboard

Extra Help  Tutoring for students who do not complete essential outcomes may receive extra help by appointment.  Students who receive below a 60% for the a quarter or multiple quarters can be offered a grade recovery contract. The grade recovery contract will:  Serve as an intervention for any student whose cumulative year grade is below a 60%.  A contract will outline a plan of action for the student to promote successful completion of classroom objectives for the remainder of the year.  The fulfillment of the contract will allow a student’s past quarterly average to be raised up to a 59%.

 Since tests are worth a large portion of a student’s grade (45%), a form a grade recovery will be offered for those students that fail a particular summative test assessment. This can be done before school, or after school by appointment with the teacher.  All students wishing to take a grade recovery test will need to complete a teacher designated grade recovery test requirement assignment prior to taking that test assignment.  The final grade will be an average of the two test assessments unless the average grade is lower than their first test assessment in which case they will keep their initial test assessment.  Grade recovery tests will have to be completed prior to the next unit test.

Classroom Rules  Come to class prepared.  No talking while I am giving notes or directions.  Be respectful of yourself and others.  No food or drinks except bottled water.  Stay seated in your assigned seat (you may get up to turn in papers, see me, sharpen pencils, throw away trash, and get the hall pass).  No charging of electronic devices.  Electronic Devices are to be used for class use only.
