Hall C Installation Down March 16 – Aug 20, 2009 –Could be sooner if funding permits AND –hall safely ready The Work Must Deinstall SANE experiment Install HES/HKS experiment Should Qweak preparations SOS strip down March 20, 2009 S. Wood

Deinstallation “GeP” electronics bunker BigCal and SANE detectors Polarized target, plumbing and platform Green wall Beamline

Installation Raised floor New beamlines with chicane Splitter magnet and target HES and HKS spectrometers Shielding bunkers for HES, HKS and electronics

HES-HKS in Hall C HK S HE S Photon Dump Beamlin e Bunker

Working safely in the Hall Report injuries 911 and 4444 Minor injuries, call medical services x7539 Hall is and will be a busy noisy place Assess/observe situation when entering hall Sandals (open toed shoes) NOT allowed ever Hard hats required when hall marked “Hard Hat Area” and inside marked areas of hall. Always recommended. Wear PPE as determined by nature of your work (Gloves, hearing protection, safety shows, hard hats, clothing) Pay attention to signage outside and inside hall. Don't work in hall alone, especially weekends. All undergraduate students (users) shall be escorted for at least first three months Don't exploit ambiguities or loopholes in rules. Err on safe side. Help to correct issue.

Work Planning Plan major jobs must be through HCList or ATLis. Major jobs = beamline work, work involving ladders, cranes, JLGs, manlifts, lots of time –Examples: SANE decabling Beamline instrumentation removal Major electronics installation Use ATLis for work requiring Operability Group (Steve Suhring) approval. Hall C originated ATLisi will be submitted by Work Coordinator Cross divisional work not requiring Suhring approval can use HCList. (Examples: Jobs with Radcon or Survey components). Coordinate work in Hall with Work Coordinator (Walter Kellner, Deputy: Andy Kenyon) If unexpected things come up in work, stop and replan

Training Training requirements of your position Standard training requirements for all staff and users –Radworker I –ODH –Hall C Awareness (SAF112) Possible Additional training, some physics staff and users may need: –Lead worker –Fall Protection –Lock and Tag

Radiation Safety Review General Radiation Work Permit –Link to GRWP at top of Hall C logbook New users read and sign (link at end of document) GRWP Everything coming out of hall must have RadCon survey –Leave small items on RadCon rack near hall entrance –Call RadCon 876-1743 (ATLis and HCList are not sufficient notification) Major work on ventillated racks requires contamination controls (air filters can collect contamination) Materials taken out of hall can NOT be recycled. Radcon released materials can be thrown away or saved in boneyard. Observe radiation postings All beamline work must be in ATLis and coordinated with RadCon Disassemble beamline/target/activated items according to a plan and with RadCon support

Hard Hats Throughout the down, there will be much crane, JLG and manlift activity. Hard hat requirement indicated by –LED signs or standard signs at doors: – – Hard hats required in whole hall –Yellow Tape – Hard hats AND Safety shoes required in marked area –Both Recommendation: –Always wear hard hat when entering hall –Remove only if signage, overhead activity and your own work allows Exceptions: –Roofed off areas HMS Hut SOS hut HES and HKS bunkers (when completed) Beamline tunnel

Safety Tape Questions What PPE is requied in areas marked off with tape that says: “HARD HAT & SAFETY SHOW AREA?” Does this signage apply to me? If I am just walking through do I need hard hat and safety shoes? If I am am wearing hard hat and safety shoes, am I free to go anywhere inside the marked off area? If I need to pass through or work in marked off area, what do I need to do?

Safety Tape Questions What PPE is requied in areas marked off with tape that says: “HARD HAT & SAFETY SHOW AREA?” Hard hat and Safety Shoes Does this signage apply to me? Yes If I am just walking through do I need hard hat and safety shoes? Yes If I am am wearing hard hat and safety shoes, am I free to go anywhere inside the marked off area? No If I need to pass through or work in marked off area, what do I need to do? Be observant Coordinate work with crew – don't distract during a lift Don't walk under or near (45 o ) loads or lifts

More on the Yellow Tape If placement of “Hard Hat and Safety Shoes Area” tape is ambiguous, ask (politely) for placement to be improved. Don't exploit ambiguity (we're not topologists) Don't use this tape where not appropriate (e.g. as generic caution warning, or where PPE specification is not going to be followed or enforced.)

People Hall C Work Coordinators and Safety Wardens: –Walter Kellner592-1527 –Andy Kenyon544-4752 Physics Division Safety Officer –Dennis Skopik –Deputy: Bert Manzlak Spokespeople for HKS Experiment: –Osamu Hashimoto, Satoshi Nakmura (Nue), Liguang Tang, Joerg Reinhold Project Coordinator for HKS experiment: (beamline) –Mike Spata Physics Division Liason for HKS experiment: –Liguang Tang Electrical Work and Safety –Bill Vulcan

Coordination Coordination meeting every Tuesday: 8:30 AM in MCC –Attended by representatives of groups working in Hall Instrumentation Controls Beamline installation HKS Collaboration Hall C Work coordinator Hall C electrical When plans change –Call Hall Work Coordinator (Walter Kellner) –Call Project Coordinator (Mike Spata)
