1 Student Profile: Level 1 Candidates Who’s Got the “Right Stuff” for Success? October 26, 2016 Apprenticeship Forum

2 Accelerated OYAP Level 1: Just the FACTS Accelerated OYAP candidates  on track to graduate by the end of semester 2  met the 40 hr. and literacy requirements by the end of semester 1  registered in a 4 credit co-op program semester 2 of their graduating year

3 Differences between OYAP & Accelerated OYAP OYAP Exploration Grade 11 or 12 OYAP Participant with MAESD Ministry of Advanced Education and Skill Development Client number in MAESD database Accelerated OYAP Commitment Grade 12 OYAP Participant and Registered Apprentice with MAESD Member of Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) Client number in MAESD Basic, Level 1 and dual credits

4 The “Right” Experience Examples of Experience  relevant technical education course(s)  previous co-op placement in a skilled trade site  dual credit course(s) in the trades  participation in the Skills Competition(s)  worked or volunteered in a skilled trade family business

5 The “Right” Numeracy & Literacy Skills Numeracy  mental math skills: compute without a calculator  basic numeracy & arithmatic skills  grade 5 - 8 math learning recovered  Manipulation of fractions  Converting metric to imperial measure Literacy  Ability to read and process college-level textbooks  Ability to search, retain and recall information to solve problems

6 The “Right” Understanding  Will require a co-op placement in the related skilled trade profession...... with a co-op employer who agrees to sponsor the OYAP student to become a registered apprentice.... before the beginning of Accelerated OYAP  Will understand that Accelerated OYAP leads into the apprenticeship pathway.
