Google Analytics implementation On this tutorial I will show you how to set up an Google Analytics account and how to connect it to a Wordpress website or Facebook app.

First thing you need to do is to login to your Google account/or client’s Google account. If you don’t have one, you can create a new one by going here by signing up.here Once you have created/logged in to your Google Account, go to http://www.google.com/analytics/ Click Create an account. Go on and click Sign Up on the next screen. You will see a page “What would you like to track”

First, choose Web Site and scroll down For this we use the Hkudos ( http://www.als.hku.hk/hkudos ) Wordpress website as an example. http://www.als.hku.hk/hkudos Add the website name Add the website URL, for this one the website is located in subfolder of the domain, so I add http://www.als.hku.hk/hkudos Choose the category for your website Choose the Time Zone

Add your account name, can be any. Data Sharing Settings are optional and you can leave the default settings there. Next, click the Tracking ID button. After agreeing the Google condition you will see a page with your tracking ID On the Tracking Code tab, Copy the code in the window. You will then need to paste the code (in our case) to HKU websites Wordpress backend.

On the Theme Settings tab you can use the Analytics Code window. Just paste the code that you got from GA tools and click Save All Changes. Login to the Wordpress backend of Hkudos website. Then go to the theme settings tab on the dashboard. NOTE: When adding the Analytics code to your Wordpress installation, usually the WP themes already have a window where you can insert the analytics code. Just look into your theme options and you should find it there. However, sometimes the themes don’t come with this option, and then you will need to do it manually or by installing a GA Wordpress plugin. The plugins tend to make WP slower, so I recommend doing it manually – see the next slide.

Adding the GA tracking code manually to your Wordpress is not that difficult either. On you Wordpress Dashboard, go to Appearance -> Editor and find the footer.php file. And in the footer.php code, find tag. Paste the GA code just before the tag and click save/update. Google recommends to put the GA tools code just before the end body tag, but it’s also possible to paste the code to the header.php file. On the header.php the best place to paste it is just before the end head tag.

Once you have added the code to your Wordpress backend, you can go and check that the actual tracking code is there. You can do this by going to the website and right clicking on your browser view the page source code. Then search the GA tracking code and you should see your code at the bottom. Now we know that the code is on the website. Now that you have confirmed that the code is there, go back to your GA account.

On your GA account go to Reporting -> Real Time –> Overview. You should see some data there, you can go to the website and refresh to double confirm. Then go back to this window and you should see at least one active visitor. This means that the GA is tracking the data on your website now. NOTE: Sometimes there might be a delay before Google Analytics starts showing the data. It’s good to check the tracking information after few days, if you don’t see any data then. Then check that the code on the website is correct.

For the Facebook apps or any HTML/PHP websites / apps, just follow the method used on slide 6. It depends on the structure of the application or website but sometimes you might need to add the tracking code to each file. For example, your Facebook app has three 3 html files: index.html, about.html and contact.html. Then you would need to add the tracking code to each of these files. You can paste it between the tags or before the tag. Just use any text editor to add the GA tracking code to your app/website files.

Hope you enjoyed reading this tutorial on how to implement Google Analytics. Now… let’s get waisted!!
