Ch.12 #1: Prisms Standards #8&9 Surface Area and Volume October 2, 2016 Goals: 1) Finding the surface area of a prism. 2) Finding the volume of a prism.

Definitions  prism: a polyhedron with two congruent faces, called bases, that are parallel to each other. Identified by the shapes of their bases.  lateral faces (the sides): parallelograms formed by connecting corresponding vertices of the bases  height (altitude): the perpendicular distance between the bases of a prism

Right Rectangular Prism Bases(2)(Top & Bottom) lateral edges lateral faces: (around the shape) height

Surface Area- sum of the areas of the faces of a polyhedron. Window washers charge by the square foot. Painting a farmers silo. How much paint to cover the entire surface? How much material is used to make a tent? Traffic signs need how much reflective paint on their surface?

Surface Area of a Right Prism Surface Area: sum of the areas of the faces of a polyhedron. S.A. = 2(B) + P(h) B: area of the base P: perimeter of the base h: height of the figure

Example #1 Find the surface area: 8 in. 5 in. 12 in. 1) 2B + Ph 3) 2{(12(5)} + {(2(12)}+{2(5)}8 4) 2(60) + (34)8 5) 120 + 272 6) 392 in 2 2) 2(lw) + (2l+2w)h Rectangular Prism 12 in. 5 in.

Assignment #1 1)P.732(Surface Area) #20, 21, 29 Draw ALL pictures!! Write formula for EACH problem!!! Show ALL work!!!

Prisms, Day #2: Volume ________ is the # of _________ ________a 3D solid. Volume is measured in_______________________. Volume cubes within ft 3, m 3, in 3, liters, gallons The items below are common volume measurements. Milk: gallons These volumes are measurements of 3-dimensional capacity to hold stuff. They are all cubic measures, sometimes calculated by L x W x H Gas: gallons Concrete: yards 3 Grande, Nonfat, White Mocha: fluid ounces

Volume of a Prism Volume of a solid : the number of cubic units contained within the interior of the solid. Measured in cubic units. Volume of a Prism: V = B(h) B is the area of the base h is the height.

Example #2 Find the volume: 8 units 5 units 12 units 1) V = Bh 2) V = {l(w)}h 3) V =(12(5))8 4) V = (60)8 5) V = 480 u³ Rectangular Prism

SUMMARY and ?’s Take a few minutes to write your summary. Make sure that you are writing 3 complete sentences. Also, don’t forget to come up with the questions for your notes as well…

Assignment #2: 1) P.746(Volume) #8,9,13,14,19 Draw ALL pictures!! Write formula for EACH problem!!! Show ALL work!!!
