Surface Area of Prisms Unit 5, Lesson 2
2
What is a Prism? Definition: –A three dimensional figure with 2 congruent polygon bases and rectangular sides. Finding the Surface Area: –Add up the areas of all of the sides.

Example #3 Find the surface area of a rectangular prism with the length of 4in, the width of 5in, and height of 6in. 148 in 2
11
Definitions: Lateral Faces – the sides of a prism that are not the bases. Lateral Edge – the edge where two lateral faces meet.
12
Lateral Area Lateral Area – the sum of the lateral faces. L.A. = ph –p is the perimeter of the base –h is the height
13
Example 1: Find the Lateral Area 5 L.A. = ph L.A. = (5+5+5) (8) L.A. = (15)(8) L.A. = 120 units 2 5 5 8
14
Example 2: In a rectangular prism, the length is 4 cm, the width is 6 cm, and the height is 9 cm. What is the lateral area? L.A. = (4+6+4+6) (9) L.A. = (20)(9) L.A. = 180 cm 2
