3 7 th Grade Registration Process Step 1 Parent Information Meeting; March 1, 2016 Step 2 Course and Registration Presentation McMillan Counselor and Registrar will visit Sixth Grade Harrison and Draper students on Wednesday, March 2 Sixth Grade Davis students visit McMillan Junior High during the school day Thursday, March 3 and Friday, March 4, 2016 Step 3 Student Online Registration; through March 25, 2016 Later in May we will have all sixth graders over to tour the building and participate in other activities to begin preparing for next year. Information will be released later in the summer concerning schedule pick-up, open house and any other information for the start of the school year.

4 7 th Grade Required Courses Language Arts 2 Courses – Reading – Writing Mathematics Science Texas History Physical Education/Athletics/Tennis Completes Six of the Eight Periods of Day

5 ADVISORY PERIOD (ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AND TEAM TIME) 30 Minute Advisory Period Enrichment, Intervention, and Remediation Time built into the daily schedule Students will report to an academic class or study area for the duration of the period Students are placed in this class, not on course selection list Completes Seven of the Eight Periods of the Day

6 CORE SUBJECTS

7 Criteria for Pre-AP, Accelerated Courses Pre-AP – Students may choose from Language Arts, Science, and Texas History – Students do not have to take Pre-AP courses in 7 th grade in order to take them in 8 th grade – It is required that at least a 75% grade average at each grading period is maintained – Students are encouraged to speak with their current academic teachers about Pre-AP recommendations

8 Pre AP and Upper Level Courses All Pre-AP, and Accelerated courses will require extensive outside work and in-depth study. Homework and outside projects will occur on a regular basis. The time committed to complete work for these classes and the time committed for after school extra and co- curricular activities is extensive

9 Language Arts Language Arts 7 – Reading – Writing Language Arts Pre-AP – Reading and Writing – Must take both together Language Arts GT/WINGS will take Pre AP Writing

10 Language Arts Pre-AP Prepares students for advanced study in writing and literature at the high school level Students should be reading at\above grade level Material covered at an accelerated pace with extensions and outside-of-class preparation Pre AP ELA-Reading and Pre AP ELA-Writing are taken together

11 Language Arts GT/ WINGS Students must be identified gifted through the WISD identification process For more information refer to the district website at www.wylieisd.netwww.wylieisd.net

12 Mathematics Math 7 Math 7 Pre-Algebra

13 Accelerated Math Pre-Algebra – Students are placed in this class per WISD Advanced Math Criteria – Prerequisites (subject to revision) Students must meet two out of three criteria to be eligible for enrollment in this course – 6 th Grade Final Year Math Average of 80 or higher – 2016 Math STAAR Performance at Level II Recommended – IAAT Algebra Readiness Assessment Scale Score of 160 or higher (may be adjusted)

14 Math 7 Pre-Algebra Designed to prepare students to take Algebra in the 8 th grade Pre-Algebra concepts such as geometry, numeration, properties, etc. will be covered 7 th Grade Math TEKS are compacted into the curriculum

15 Algebra I 8 th Grade Prerequisite – successful completion of 7 th grade Pre-Algebra Successful completion will result in one high school math credit Study of real numbers and properties Solving and graphing linear and quadratic equations and functions

16 Algebra I Cont. Credit follows students to the high school. Grade Point Average will follow student to high school. GPA is the numeric representation of the final course grade. Considered an Upper Level Class with adjusted GPA Students are not permitted to re-take Algebra I once they have passed this course

17 Algebra I Cont. Taking Algebra provides earlier participation in dual credit courses to better prepare for STEM career experiences Taking Algebra in the 8 th grade requires taking Calculus or another upper level Math course senior year

18 Science Science 7 Science 7 Pre-AP

19 Science Pre-AP Requires students to perform field and laboratory investigations at a more advanced level using scientific method Students enrolled in this class should expect extensive outside-of-class preparation and independent readings and study

20 7 th Grade Texas History Texas History Texas History Pre-AP

21 Students will be able to identify various aspects of the Lone Star State Development of problem solving skills as well as learning decision making procedures Students enrolled in this class should expect extensive independent preparation and readings

22 Physical Education It is a junior high requirement that students take two years of physical education Students will take PE\Athletics in both the 7 th and 8 th grade Students may take Tennis class to fulfill their P.E. requirement Tennis may also be taken as an elective

23 Athletics Athletics is for those students wanting to participate in University Interscholastic League Competitive Sports This is an “honors” PE course Students must participate in at least one sport or try out for at least two At the beginning of the year, if a student is not participating in boys football or girls volleyball, they may be placed in P.E. until they make an athletic team Students will dress out everyday and be expected to work out everyday – Doctor’s notes will be required if a student is unable to participate Completion of a medical history, physical examination, and parental permission forms are required prior to participation For students to be placed in Athletics, all forms, signed by a parent, must be turned in when school resumes in August

24 Athletics Cont. Students must meet state mandated academic “no pass no play” requirements to be eligible to participate A physical fitness test and questionnaire may be completed in 6 th grade PE classes later in the spring for those wanting to be in Athletics A presentation at all Intermediate Schools will be held for all future 7 th graders to discuss the policies and procedures of Athletics.

25 Athletics Sports offered: Girls – Volleyball- tryouts – Cross country – Basketball- tryouts – Track and field – Soccer – tryouts – Tennis (intra-district school competition only) Boys – Football – Cross country – Basketball- tryouts – Track and field – Soccer – tryouts – Tennis (intra-district school competition only)

26 Off Campus Physical Education Students cannot be in athletics with Off Campus P.E. Will take place of one class period, student will leave campus at the end of 7 th period Students have two options for Off Campus Physical Education Off Campus Activity or Sport such as equestrian, swimming, gymnastics Prior approval must be given Woodbridge CC Golf Program McMillan will receive 10 places There is a financial requirement

27 7 th Grade Electives Semester courses – Visual Arts – Theatre Arts – Media Tech – GEMS (Math and\or Reading Remediation) Full year courses – Choir Girls and Boys – Band – Yearbook/Journalism – Wylie Way – Tennis

28 Electives There are no guarantees that your child will be placed in the elective of their choice – Good possibility for Band or Choir The priority is to place your child in the core subjects first, then required courses and then electives

29 Visual Arts Introduces students to art: art history, criticisms, theories, and production There will be an academic and a studio focus One semester course

30 Theatre Arts Designed to expose students to many types of performances utilized in Theater Students will gain experience in mime, improvisation, reader’s theatre, monologues, and duet acting One semester course

31 Media Tech Students will learn the following concepts and applications; Adobe Photoshop Google Classroom Google Apps Digital Citizenship Video Production Semester Course

32 GEMS 7 th and 8 th Grade – Semester Course This course provides direct instruction in academic study skills, organization skills and social skills Students will be placed in this course per administrative decision This is not on the course selection list

33 Band Students will be placed in a band class with other students of comparable skills Auditions will occur prior to placement All bands are full year courses

34 Choir Students will be placed in choir with other students of comparable skills Auditions will occur prior to placement Being in sixth grade choir is not a prerequisite for joining choir as a seventh grader All choirs are full year courses

35 Yearbook\Journalism 7 th and 8 th Grade – Year Course Introductory course designed to explore written and photo forms of communication Within this class a select group of students will be chosen to complete the 2015-16 The 2016-17 McMillan Yearbook will be produced and published Students will complete an application process later in the spring to receive this class

36 Wylie Way 7 th and 8 th Grade – Year Course Students will learn interpersonal relationship skills and leadership skills A major portion of this course will be spent planning and participating in school and community service projects The curriculum will model the Wylie Way character development program of Wylie ISD

37 Tennis 7 th and 8 th Grade – Year Course This course is designed to teach tennis skills to students at all levels of playing ability Students will play on the McMillan Tennis Team Competition will be with only schools within Wylie ISD

38 New Electives Due to the potential for change in enrollment numbers, new electives may be added There are no guarantees that your students will be placed in the elective of their choice

39 Interdisciplinary Academic Teaming There will be three Academic Teams Students on an academic team will all have the same core subject teachers The Academic Team of teachers will meet one period a day Time is provided so the academic and social needs of each individual student can be better met An Academic Team is a smaller supportive group for students to belong There will be activities, competitions, recognition assemblies and other events planned through their teams

40 Next Year Information School hours are 8:15 am to 3:30 pm School doors will open at 7:30 am Students will report to the cafeteria or other assigned supervised areas upon arrival to school Tutorials begin at 7:45 am and 7:30 am with appointment from teacher Teachers will have morning and/or afternoon tutorials available to students every day

Shot Records Must be Up to date for your child to attend first day of school – All records must be up to date and in the McMillan Junior High clinic before Monday, August 15, 2016 – Records may be dropped off at Davis Intermediate, Draper Intermediate, or Harrison Intermediate – Information will be mailed out later this spring – Contact Lisa Burns, McMillan Nurse at 972- 429-3233
