A doctor’s first responsibility is to diagnose the patients’ injuries and illnesses. After that they will interview the patient to find out what their complaints are and conduct physical exams. When the interview is done they combine the information. By combining the information about their patients’ symptoms and medical histories and results of diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, biopsies, and blood tests, and other test if needed. This job is impacted by technology because they use computers/ TV screens that show the patients’ heartbeats which is called an electrocardiogram. Also normal computers to do paperwork regarding the patients case and medical health.

Doctors have to face 4 different safety and health hazards. - Biological Hazards (catch a disease from that patient if its contagious) - Chemical Hazards (included cleaning supplies, drugs, chemicals, cleaning and equipment disinfectants, waste anesthetic gases and even smoke from laser or electric surgical procedures) - Physical Hazards (doctors most often manifest themselves as musculoskeletal injuries, usually caused by constantly lifting and handling patients when they are needed a lot of help) - Workplace Violence ( includes violent with the patient or the family members who are combative, or you might even come in contact with assaults on patients along with the medical staff. Males and female doctors are treated equally and paid equally because the women have rights and it’s a fair job where everyone is treated the same. It depends what kind of doctor you are and then you will get paid depending on that. If you are a surgeon then obviously you would get paid more than a family doctor.

5 QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY FOR ENTRY AND SUCCESS Some personal qualities you need to become a doctor is to be a very social person so you will have confidence while talking to the patient about their injuries. They are encouraged to ask the patient some open questions about the injury/illness. Doctors on-call are also called during the night and they can’t sleep while at work so they need to make difficult decisions like that.

6 PREPARATION NEEDED To become a doctor, you’ll need to complete a minimum of 2 to 3 years of undergraduate university education, including several required science courses to get into medical school. Applicants usually have to write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and students with the highest marks have the chance to get accepted. So most schools also consider things like character, leadership qualities, and extracurricular activities. It is very hard to get into a medical school which is very competitive, with most students who have a bachelor’s degree and some even have a masters degree in case. Medical School takes 3-4 years to complete and then you have to go to Doctors of Medicine. After the MD obtained, graduates must complete a residency program in a medical or surgical specialty. Job trainings take place in hospitals or other medical settings. Most of the residencies last between 2 and 6 years, depending on the area of medicine that is taken. 2 years for Physicians, 4 years for Pediatricians, and 6 years for Neurosurgeons. Doctors must pass the certification exams administered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPS) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Another thing they’ll need is a license from the province or territory where they will be working. The fees cost about $6000 to $16000 per year for Canadian residents

7 PREPARATION CONTINUE… Universities in British Columbia that offer courses to become a medical doctor: -University of British Columbia (UBC) -British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Universities outside of British Columbia that offer courses to become a medical doctor: -The University of Queensland School of Medicine in Australia (UQ)

8 REMUNERATION Being a doctor means that will be your life time job because this job is not a seasonal job unless if you get old and decide to retire or quit for some medical or personal reasons. Earnings of a doctor depends where they live, what kind of a doctor they are, specialty, and employer. Highly trained specialists, such as ophthalmologists, tend to get more money than family physicians sine their at a higher position than them. Doctors bill the government after every patient they see. The amount depends on how many patients they see and also how many medical procedures they perform. This means they have some control of how much they get paid by increasing the number of hours they work to increase the pay. In general, doctors can earn anywhere from less than $100,000 to higher than $400,000 a year. Residents have the lowest incomes: usually somewhere between $44,000 and $80,000 a year. Doctors that are salaried typically receive benefits, such as paid vacation days, dental coverage, and contributions to retirement plans. Doctors who work in private practice must provide their own benefit charges.
