2 ● Langston Hughes lived from 1902 to1967 ● He was famous for his work as an American poet and author during the Harlem Renaissance.

3 ● Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri on Feb. 1, 1902 ● His mother was Carrie Hughes and his father was James Hughes

4 ● His parents divorced when he was a child and his father moved to Mexico ● His grandmother raised him until he was 13

5 ● When he was 13 he moved to Lincoln, Illinois with his mother. There he began writing poetry. ● He only stayed in Lincoln for a year. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio when his step dad found work there.

6 ● An english teacher introduced him to poets Carl Sandburg and Walk Whitman, and these became one of his earliest influences ● When he was a junior in high school, his father was living in Toluca, Mexico and wanted him to move in with him during the summer.

7 ● He lived with his father that summer, but did not get along well with him ● He returned to Cleveland to finish high school

8 ● After graduating high school, he tried to convince his father to pay for his college at Columbia university in new york. ● He wanted to be a writer but his father wanted him to be an engineer.

9 ● After he sent some of his poems to the Brownies Book and Crisis magazines and it was accepted, his father agreed to pay for a year at Columbia university. ● He went to Columbia university in the fall of 1921, but only stayed there for a year.

10 ● In 1924,he becomes involved with writers in Harlem and publishes "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" ● Also in 1924, he drops out of Columbia university and travels to Africa, Paris, and Holland

11 ● After traveling, Hughes returns to the U.S. and lives with his mother in Washington DC ● In 1925, he wins the Opportunity magazine poetry contest for the weary blues.

12 1926 ● In 1926, “The Weary Blues” is published by Alfred Knopf ● Also in 1926, he goes to Lincoln University.

13 ● In 1930, Hughes published his novel “Not Without Laughter, The Dream Keeper, And Other Poems”. ● The Pittsburg Courier ran a headline, “Langston Hughes Book Of Poems Trash”.

14 ● In 1927, his second book of poems “Fine Clothes To The Jew” was published by Alfred Knopf ● In 1929,he got a B.A. Degree from Lincoln University. 1927-1929

15 1934-1935 ● In 1934, his book : The Ways Of White Folks” was published ● In 1935 his play “Mulatto” opened up on Broadway

16 1941-1943 ● His first autobiography, “The Big Sea”, is published ● In 1943 he begins writing columns for the Chicago Defender.

17 1950-1951 ● His book 1950 “Simple Speaks His Mind” is published in 1950 ● “Montage Of A Dream Deferred”, was published in 1951

18 1954 ● In 1954, Hughes's book “Simple Takes A Wife” is published ● The book receives the Anisfield - Wolf book award

19 1960-1961 ● Hughes receives the Spingarn Medal from the National Association for The Advancement Of Colored People in 1960. ● In 1961, he is elected to the American Academy of Arts And Letters.

20 1967 ● On May 22, 1967, Langston Hughes dies of prostate cancer. ● The New York City Preservation Commission later makes his home at 20 East 127th Street a city landmark.
