We are inheritors of mission not innovators of mission. We are participants in mission but not proprietors of mission. We are partakers of mission but not path-setters of mission Mission belongs to God, missio dei.

Mission is a movement from God to the world, mission is God’s initiative. God is the Head of mission and of all actions. Mission brings God’s redemption to the whole of creation through Jesus Christ. God of the Bible is a missionary God. God sent Jesus into the world. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit sends the believers into the world.

Mission is also centered on the Kingdom of God. It is active, future-oriented. Mission is rooted in biblical mandate and historic tradition. It is integrative and wholistic. The goal of mission, therefore, is the building up of a new humanity.

Role of the church Christian mission lays out the road map for the church. The church is sent into the world to make disciples for the transformation of the world. The church is the Body of Christ. Hence all believers share the joy and sorrow of its parts. Believers strive for unity, interaction and mutuality in relationship with all the members of the Body of Christ.

The church is an instrument of salvation but not the fulfillment of salvation. Mission motivates the church to move into the community to demonstrate the way to salvation in Jesus Christ. The church, therefore, provides a platform to engage in mission. The church invites all the believers to participate in mission. The role of the church is to be in missionary relationship with the community in which it is situated. Mission and church are not mutually exclusive but they complement each other

Theology of Mission Mission and theology go hand in hand. Theology moves the believers to engage in mission, and mission rightly practiced enables the believers to develop theology.

What is the “fertilizer” that reinforces branches such as racism, sexism, classism, greed, etc.? What are the institutions that keep structures of imbalance and asymmetry in place? In what ways do they keep them in place? How are you connected?

How can communities of faith prune the “dead” branches of xenophobia, hate crimes and racism? How can communities of faith work to prevent such branches from growing and embrace immigrants for the energy and diversity of language, art and culture that they bring? How do we make sense of these different perspectives of strain versus gain? What actions can communities can take that can lead toward more of a welcoming environment for new immigrants?

Name the structures and barriers that you identify as you read the specific stories from your book. What are two common strategies for addressing root causes (structural change)? What are two common strategies for addressing the effects (service)? How do these approaches differ? Where do you see yourself in the story? Where do you see the church working? Where are there gaps?

Closing Hymn “You Are the Seed” The United Methodist Hymnal no. 583 Text and music © 1979, Cesáreo Gabaraín. Published by OCP. All rights reserved. Reprinted under LicenSing online # 604956

You are the seed that will grow a new sprout; you’re a star that will shine in the night; you are the yeast and a small grain of salt, a beacon to glow in the dark.

Go, my friends, go to the world, proclaiming love to all, messengers of my forgiving peace, eternal love. Be, my friends, a loyal witness, from the dead I arose; “Lo, I will be with you forever, till the end of the world.”

You are the dawn that will bring a new day; you’re the wheat that will bear golden grain; you are a sting and a soft, gentle touch, my witnesses wher-e’er you go.

Go, my friends, go to the world, proclaiming love to all, messengers of my forgiving peace, till the end of the world. Be, my friends, a loyal witness, from the dead I arose; “Lo, I will be with you forever, till the end of the world.”
