Breakdown Work Structure Applying Management Tools to a Project

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) WBS: Defines the total system to be developed or produced. Relate the elements of work to be accomplished to each other and to the end product. Is displayed as a product oriented family tree composed of hardware, software, services, data and facilities which defines the total program. Standard: Mil Hdbk-881

ORGANIZATIONAL Provides Structure for Assigning Multi-Disciplinary Product Teams TECHNICAL Shows the System and its Subsystems as a Product Tree Product Tree aids: Interface Identification & Control Specification Development Provides a Structure: Work Assignment Material/Part Ordering Configuration Items must be traceable to WBS BUSINESS Provides Structure for Budgets and Cost Estimates Collect and Analyze Costs to track Budget Basic Purposes of Work Breakdown Structure

The Anatomy of a WBS A WBS has a Product Part and a Process Part. Product part of the system – Products delivered to the operational customer. – Design (Physical) architecture. Process part of the system – Efforts required to develop, produce and support products. – Execution of the IPT primary function process elements.

WBS Development Ensure all applicable work is represented. Enough levels provided to identify work packages for control purposes. (usually levels 0,1,2) Duplication of work eliminated. If too few levels identified - management visibility and integration of work packages may be difficult. If too many levels - too much time may be wasted in performing program review and control actions.

Level Zero- Overall System (derived from Functional level 0) The entire Program Example: EE321X course (Robots and C&C Essay) Level One- Subsystems (derived from Functional level 1) Major System(s) Examples: Recycling Robot (competition) – C&C Reflective Essay Level Two- Components (derived from Functional level 2) Subsystem(s): Recover, Move, Store, Sort ……, Research, Select, Reflect, Review, Draft, Write For Program Managers, levels 1-3 are of prime importance WBS Levels

The lower level elements included and summarized in the Air Vehicle element are: Airframe Segment (A11100), Navigation/Guidance Segment (A32100), Airborne Development Test Equipment (A61100, and Airborne Operational Test Equipment (A61200) COST DESCRIPTION MPC/PMC Work Order/Work Auth A10100 See lower level WBS Elements Applicable SOW Paragraph: 3.6.2 Cost Content - System Contractor The cost to be accumulated against this element include a summarization of all costs required to plan, develop, fabricate, assemble, integrate and perform development testing, analysis and reporting for the air vehicle. It also includes all costs associated with the required efforts in integrating, assembling and checking our GFP required to create this element.

Work Package Defines: The work required. Functional responsibility for performance. It is a specific task or set of tasks to be accomplished to produce a: -Drawing, -Design, -Piece of hardware or service.

WBS Summary WBS development is a systems engineering responsibility. – Total system described through a logical breakout of elements into work packages. – Tool for planning and assignment of tasks and work packages. – Assists in tracking resource expenditure, schedule, and technical performance. – Must be developed to appropriate level and represent all applicable work.

WBS Assignment Complete a WBS for your project using the WBS Microsoft Template located at in the Teamwork file at the Angel site.
