2 DAY 1 – August 9 All mentors arrive to UC 104 promptly at 7:30AM for briefing and set-up Mentors will report to individual classrooms with materials & report to the Jungle by 8:00AM Bridge T-Shirts will be worn every day by all team members

3 MEET YOUR MENTOR 9:00AM – 9:15AM No formal opening program – No speaker or testimonials Students will check-in at the Jungle and receive their group numbers Mentors will be in Jungle ready to meet and greet their students

4 MEET YOUR MENTOR CONT. No chairs Each mentor will have a designated area to meet with their group of students – Marked by numbers placed on the floor – Group numbers will be on student nametags You will also have a sign waiting at your number to hold up during Meet Your Mentor – Signs will be provided – You can make an alternate sign to keep in your classroom that is more creative

6 MEET YOUR MENTOR CONT. When you greet a new student in your group – Learn their name – Chat with them a bit – Make sure they parked in an appropriate spot on campus … PARKING PASSES/VALIDATIONS WILL NOT BE PROVIDED! – Encourage them to get to know others in the group You will be dismissed at 9:30AM via a coordinator at the back doors – Once you see the lights dim, please begin quieting your group for dismissal and depart to your classroom only once your section has been dismissed

7 Lunch Lunch will NOT be provided on Day 1 for students – However, lunch WILL be provided for team members on Day 1 ONLY – Lunch will be in the Tower and Campus Center Help your students locate different places to eat on and off campus – Citizens Commons, IU Hospital, Indiana Avenue, etc. It is encouraged to go on “lunch dates” with other groups for further mingling

8 OTHER DAY 1 NOTES Section Faculty will be waiting for you in individual classroom locations Be ready to give a personal testimonial in class if you participated in Summer Bridge as a student

9 DAILY LOGISTICS Bridge will be from 9:00AM-4:00PM for students each day – You are required to come early/stay late as your instructional team discusses (15 min. MINIMUM) Each day you will come to UC 2001 (outside Steph’s office) to pick up a walkie talkie and your attendance sheet for the day from the bin – Attendance needs to be taken and returned to the bin by 12:00PM each day of the program

10 DAILY LOGISTICS CONT. You absolutely MUST be in your classroom ON TIME (a.k.a. 15 minutes early) each day! – On Time = Late; Early = On Time; Late = Unacceptable You are responsible for bringing the classroom materials bag to class each day

11 SESSION LOGISTICS Math – All of your students will be going to the same Math Session at a scheduled time – Take students to their Math Sessions English – All of your students will be going to the same English Session at a scheduled time – You will be transporting them to their sessions Campus Computing – You will be facilitating this session within regular class time – Stay tuned for training this afternoon!

12 SESSION LOGISTICS You will be asked to facilitate other sessions within regular classroom time, be open to it and keep communication open with your instructional team Keep these sessions interactive! – Come up with activities/discussion topics – Use CoLTs – Don’t lecture the whole time – Use FYS Mentor Resources on Canvas for ideas! Sessions may include … – Time Management, Learning Styles, Note Taking, Diversity, Healthy Lifestyles, PULs, Stress Management, Study Skills, Test Taking, Transition form High School to College, etc. Icebreakers/Warm-Ups

13 Other Notes… Office of Student Involvement hosts fun evening events for Summer Bridge students most nights – Encourage students to attend – Attend 1 with your students, they will love it!

14 CLOSING PROGRAM In the Jungle Encourage cheering and spirit within group Agenda – Coordinator with Fun Introduction – Speaker – Mentor Performance (shhh… this is a secret! ) – Closing and Dismissal

15 A Bridge tradition As the mentor, you are responsible for bringing this up in your section – faculty may not know about it. No more than 30 seconds Have to be able to do chant in the bleachers Some sections may be combined for this (E.G. SPEA I & SPEA II) Do Not… – Boo other sections – Claim that you are “greatest” or the “best” – Stomp or jump Section Chant

16 Mentors will be doing a surprise performance Rehearsal at 1:15pm today! The show will take place at the center of the court Know another mentor during Summer Bridge (IPMP, MAC, etc.)? – Invite them to join the dance by teaching the steps! Mentor Performance

17 Good Ole Housekeeping! All Bridge Team Meeting – Wednesday, August 3 – 11:00AM-5:00PM – LE 102 Summer Bridge – August 9-12 & 15-18 – Be in UC 104 on August 9 at 7:30AM for Day 1 briefing … wear your Orange Summer Bridge shirt!
