2 Some Important internet terms: Archie : A program used to search files at FTP sites. There are currently 30 Archie servers in the world. Web site : Collection of web pages. Ex. Home page: The main page of a web site. Host : A computer system that is the source of network services. HTTP: The client server protocol where WWW is based. IP : A Protocol that allows a packet to travel through multiple networks on the way to its destination.

3 Week-3 (Lecture-1) IP Address: A unique number assigned to every computer connected to internet. Browser: System Program that allows you to surf the web. Web Site: A place on the Internet. Every web page has a location where it resides. Spam: Sending the message to a large number of users The Internet version of junk mails. Surfing: The process of 'looking around' the Internet. URL : Address of web site. WWW : Is a universal mass of web pages connected together through links.

4 Week-3 (Lecture-1) Wireless technologies Types of Wireless Technologies: Wireless Local Area Networks 802.11b (Wireless Ethernet) 802.11a, HiperLAN ii, and home RF Fixed Broadband Wireless Multiservice Wide Area Networks Mobile Wireless Wireless Personal Area Networks Bluetooth technologies: It is a cable replacement. It provide low cost wireless communications between PCs, mobile phones and other devices. It is a radio frequency technology for short- range wireless networking.

5 Week-3 (Lecture-1) WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) It allows web-like content to be sent to mobile devices. A special protocol-suite for wireless Web access Why we need WAP: Interface over mobile phones is different (The network is different, limited bandwidth) The client devices are different Ex. weak CPU, small memory restricted MMI (display and keyboard, no mouse) The users are different - ease of use is essential
