2 Preposition A preposition is a word that connects a noun, pronoun, or phrase to other words in a sentence. It is a word that can indicate direction, location, or time. It usually comes before a noun. It is usually not placed at the end of a sentence unless part of a phrasal verb The word or phrase that the preposition introduces is called the object of the preposition.

5 Definition of a location preposition A location preposition is a word used to show a specific place. Follow two simple rules, that’s it: – We use at and in to say where something or somebody is. – Rule 1: at is used when we talk about a position or point. – Rule 2: in is used to talk about something big enough to be all around a person.

6 Examples of location prepositions They are waiting at the restaurant. The car was parked on the street. She sat in the train. They were among friends. The book is behind the shelves. The paper is between the books.

7 Examples of location prepositions Your shoes are in front of the door. Her toys were next to the bed. The table is beside the dresser. The picture was hanging over the window. The cow was sitting under the tree. The birds flew high above the mountain top. You can see the birds sitting slightly below the mountain top.

Examples: – The rocket traveled through space. – The tour group walked across the street. – They brought the luggage into the room. – They walked around the shopping center. – He walked up the stairs. – He walked down the stairs.

10 Definition of a Time Preposition A time preposition is a word used to show a point in time or a length of time

11 Simple rules for Time Preposition On is used for days and dates. In is used for months, seasons, years and parts of the day. At is used for points of time, mainly for (a) hours of the day (b) holiday periods. By a point of time/in a period of time. Since is used with a point of time. For is used with a period of time, i.e. Length of time till now.

12 Prepositions of Time: Examples – She is going to work at night. – The meeting is on Monday. – The team will arrive in Summer. – We have not seen them since last week. – We cannot meet until next Sunday. – He kept talking during class. – It rained throughout January.
