2. What it will look like You will create an outline for an entire essay, planning out a total of 6 DECs between two body paragraphs. You will only write one body paragraph, a tri-DEC (this is how we’ve modified for Pre-AP; next year you’ll write the whole thing) You will get 20 minutes to read and annotate your story, then 50 minutes to write. (No extra time will be given)

3. Types of Organization For essays, you organize your paragraphs based on ideas, and of course each idea should support some part of the thesis. Within each paragraph, there are also methods of organization:

4. Methods of Organizing a Paragraph Organizing method one: Time - organize according to chronology—the order of the narrative’s plot, for instance, or of major details in the poem Organizing method two: Place - Organize according to the settings which shape the character’s development

5. Methods of Organizing a Paragraph Organizing method three: Idea - Organize according to the ideas introduced in the topic sentence. Often these ideas are part of a definition, an analogy, a comparison/contrast, a classification, or a cause and effect that the writer will apply to the text.

6. What to avoid when organizing your essay/paragraphs Do not organize your essay around devices. For example, the first paragraph is diction and the second is imagery. You want to organize your essay around different moments in the story that support your thesis. Each paragraph can analyze more than one device, as long as the meaning created by each device proves the topic sentence, which proves the thesis.
