SHERRY BURRILL DEIRDRE MARKHAM DIANA TORREZ KM Solution for Anderson School of Management Final Client Presentation DJT/SLB/DFM

Project Goals: Review Create a knowledge management (KM) system to Provide information about best practices for online teaching Allow new and tenured faculty to share, create and reuse knowledge Enable Ms. Brooks to effectively utilize her time Ensure that knowledge is readily accessible Assist in the development of communities of practice so online teachers can coordinate their teaching activities and build knowledge in their respective areas of expertise DJT/SLB/DFM

KM as an Organizational Strategy Productivity/Efficiency/Asset Growth Value: Broaden recruitment opportunities More online classes Increased enrollment Greater ROI of Share Point platform DJT/SLB/DFM

KM Solution: Measures of success Consistency in course design: use of “best practices” Reduction of recurring issues and duplicated effort Increased student performance, better faculty facilitation due to improved course design Shorter learning curve for new faculty Continuous improvement of the online instructional process Capturing both tacit and explicit knowledge: documents, examples and expert advice DJT/SLB/DFM

Facilitate Collaborative Work: Distributed Cognition DJT/SLB/DFM Online Teaching Design Build COP SharePoint Course Design Communication Creating Interaction Assessment/ Assignment Learning in the Online Environment

KM Solution: Searches Group topics for ease of location of material  Course Design Folder – creating a WebCT course, syllabus …  Communication with Students – e-mail, announcements …  Creating Interaction with Students – discussion board …  Assessment/Assignment – graded, student self-assessment …  Learning in the Online Environment – lessons learned … Evaluate through SQL server examination of query logs and user interviews to adjust system as needed. DJT/SLB/DFM

KM Process: Create, Capture, Organize, Reuse Site structure will be key to supporting this goal Faculty will be able to contribute to “lessons learned” at the end of each semester Archive best discussion board questions/answers to build reusable knowledge Through a yearly technology showcase, brown bag discussions, and one-on-one contact with faculty, the project coordinator will promote use of the KMS. Project coordinator will ensure learning objects link to each objective to prevent duplicate efforts and redundancy in the KMS. DJT/SLB/DFM

Meet the Cognitive Needs for Learners Factual  Documents outlining: common terminology for online course components(WebCT, Elluminate, NMEL), course set-up steps with corresponding timeline and basic elements of an online course. Conceptual  Articles about online pedagogy: the online learning environment, communication within this environment and online teaching and learning. Procedural  Examples of: appropriate use of videos, techniques e.g. how to minimize repeat questions within class, skills DJT/SLB/DFM

Meet the Cognitive Needs for Learners Continued Metacognitive  Best practices  Tips embedded throughout the system  Discussion Board Managing Tacit Knowledge  Brown Bag Meetings  Yellow Pages DJT/SLB/DFM

Online Learning Proof of Concept DJT/SLB/DFM

Process Diagram: Creating a Syllabus New Faculty Pulls TemplateExampleProceduresExpert Advice Standardized format What it looks like How do I?Never thought of that Meets objective: Syllabus created Experienced Faculty Pulls TemplateExpert Advice Pushes More Expert Advice Project Coordinator Authors Reviewers Approvers Feedback, discussion boards, brown bag sessions, CoPs MetacognitiveTacit knowledge made explicit Gaps identified Knowledge products strengthened DJT/SLB/DFM

KM Solution: Implementation Stages  Introduce system to faculty Announcement about KM System Development during Faculty Meeting E-mail with link to site and introductory PowerPoint on site structure Demonstrate site structure based on faculty objectives Develop COPs – discussion and collaboration Brown bag sessions at the beginning, middle and end of semester. Use ASM Computer lab to demonstrate system. Faculty can get hands-on experience using system Fully integrated KM system Current project coordinator as approver Other faculty evolve from knowledge users to creators and reviewers Moving from being strictly student focused to colleague focused in a learning environment DJT/SLB/DFM

Making Knowledge Visible All online faculty will have access Email alerts when new information is posted Collaborative involvement: brown bag sessions, surveys, discussion groups Word of mouth – cheerleaders Promotion by project coordinator DJT/SLB/DFM

Facilitate Collaborative Work: Roles Authors: identified/selected based on their depth of knowledge Reviewers: familiar with the subject but also have a grasp of the bigger picture Approver: has the authority to support and implement As the KMS community grows active, these roles will be shared throughout the community DJT/SLB/DFM

Facilitate Collaborative Work: Measure Performance Web Site Reporting  Number of visits  Number of downloads  Search topics  Number knowledge products written/reviewed/approved Project Coordinator Workload  Requests for assistance Enrollment/Graduation statistics Faculty/Student feedback (semester end survey) DJT/SLB/DFM

Innovative Learning Yellow pages section with contact information for experts Member profiles Social network analysis DJT/SLB/DFM

Incentives Address psychological needs of the community  Demonstrate how it will save time for faculty, allow them to be more efficient  Focus on providing recognition, appreciation, and peer acknowledgement to those who collaborate and participate in the knowledge creation process DJT/SLB/DFM
