SPIRITUAL REFLECTION… LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL

VALUE: WISDOM WOW: Humble TOW: What does it mean to be humble? LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL Brockington College – A Church of England Academy

A STORY - BEING HUMBLE AND SERVING OTHERS  Imagine that as we are sitting here, we are awaiting a visit from a very important person. David Beckham is coming to our school. Imagine that it has been a hot day and you are all feeling sweaty after PE. You’d love to get showered and changed but the teacher is making you all stand in line in the courtyard, on your best behaviour.  You are feeling excited – you think about David Beckham’s great skills in scoring goals. He’s so talented. You begin to wonder if he will stop to talk to you or if he will just walk straight past you without noticing you. Will he be friendly to you or is he so great & famous that he won’t even look your way. Will he just want to see the important people? Suddenly, you see a big Rolls Royce draw up outside the school and he steps out of the car.  You hold your breath straining to see – the excitement is unbearable, you can’t believe it! David Beckham is actually walking into the courtyard. Everyone is looking up at him. How will he act? Is he too famous to talk to any of you or will he smile in your direction. Take a few moments to imagine what you think might happen next... LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL

CONTINUED…  Very quietly you watch as David does something completely unexpected. He picks up a towel and walks over to the kitchen. You all look hot & tired after PE he says looking at you all. You carry on watching as he fills a bowl of water and takes it over to someone in your class. Puzzled you watch as he takes off their trainers & their socks and washes their smelly sweaty feet. “I know how sweaty & uncomfortable I feel after a match. That should be better” he adds as he dries his feet with a towel.  You realise that the person he has chosen is brilliant in PE – perhaps David knows that and that is why he chose them. But then he goes over to someone who doesn’t like doing PE. Someone who hardly knows who David Beckham is and he washes his feet too and chats to him for a while. Now you are feeling really confused… Why is he behaving like this? Why would someone so great be so humble? LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL

CONTINUED…  You watch David go around the class, washing everyone’s feet, and gradually you realise that he will come to you and wash your feet too. How does that make you feel? What will you say to him? Picture the scene and notice your feeling. David washes your feet and as he dries them he says “Go and do the same”. And he hands you the bowl and the towel and he leaves…  Take a few moments to imagine what you do next. Where do you take the bowl? Whose feet will you wash next? LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL

CAN YOU THINK OF SOMEONE WHO IN HISTORY IS BELIEVED TO HAVE DONE SOMETHING SIMILAR?  At this time of year, Christians remember the birth of Jesus, who they believe to be the Son of God. It is also a time when Christians remember the life of Jesus as told in the Bible.  In the Gospel of John in the Bible, chapter 13, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. It is believed to have been a great mark of humility, that God himself washed the feet of his friends. LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL

TIME FOR REFLECTION/PRAYER…  How can we learn from the wisdom demonstrated in both of these stories?  Can you think of times when others have shown humility?  Can you become more humble in your actions? LEARNING TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL
