5

Employed in hospitals, nursing homes, walk-in clinics, prisons, schools, and other medical settings The work can be physically and emotionally demanding Potential hazards include contact with patients who have infectious diseases Most work 35 to 45 hours a week Some work shifts, including evenings and weekends
6
Training and Qualifications? After high school, you have the option of earning either a degree or diploma in nursing. There are two types of degree programs: the 4- year Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) and the 2-year associate degree in nursing (ADN). Diploma programs take about 3 years to complete. The higher your level of education, the more advantages you will have in the workforce. For example, some hospitals will only hire graduates who have a bachelor’s degree. In addition, there are more advancement opportunities open to nurses with bachelor’s degrees than those with associate degrees or diplomas. All states require nurses to be licensed, which means you have to pass a State Licensing exam first.
7
School/Degree needed? Any school that offers a BSN, ADN will qualify for nursing. For me, the college that will work best would be Ferris State University. Mostly because I’m close to my dad, and financially it’ll work out better. Ferris has a wonderful RN program and I can’t wait to attend next year!
8
2 nd Career Choice? Nurse anesthetists give drugs or gases to patients so they don’t feel pain during or after medical procedures.
9
Core Tasks Consult doctors about upcoming procedures and patients’ conditions Review patients’ medical records Decide what type of anesthetic to use Tell patients about the anesthetic and answer their questions Administer anesthetic and monitor patients during procedures
10
Workplace: Most work in operating and delivery rooms in hospitals and clinics Most work a 40-hour week Some work shifts, including evenings and weekends On their feet much of the time Potential hazards include contact with patients who have infectious diseases
11
Education! Nurse anesthesia programs take 2 to 3 years to complete, and lead to a master’s degree. If you want to work as a nurse anesthetist, you must first train as a registered nurse (RN). This involves completing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN), or a related degree. You must then be licensed as an RN, which requires passing a national licensing exam. Next, you will need to work for at least 1 year in an acute care nursing setting. Once you have fulfilled this experience requirement, you will be eligible to apply to a nurse anesthesia program. However, because entrance to these programs is highly competitive, it can be beneficial to have more than 1 year of experience before you apply.
12
Earnings? $100,000 to $200,000 a year for most The average is around $160,000 a year Independent nurses are paid on a contract basis
13
School/Degree needed? Basically, I’ve already decided on which school I plan on attending after I graduate. It’s probably going to end up costing me somewhere around $15,000 -$25,000 (roughly) for me to go for my RN. As soon as I get that I plan on going for Nurse Anesthetist, which will most likely cost me another $25,000 (approx.) because of grants and school funding I will be able to receive.
