Daniel Overview 5/8/2016 6

Dreams and Visions: Dan 2 & 7 5/8/2016 7

Daniel 8 Revelation of Daniel’s Vision, Verses 1-14 – Introduction, Verses 1-2 – The Ram and the Goat, Verses 3-8 – The “Little Horn”, Verses 9-14 Interpretation of Daniel’s Vision, Verses 15-27 – Introducing Gabriel, Verses 15-19 – Meaning of the Ram and Goat, Verses 20-21 – Meaning of the “Little Horn”, Verses 22-26 – Daniel’s Response, Verse 27 5/8/2016 8

A Transporting Vision (1:1-2) Daniel links Ch. 7 with Ch. 8 – Language change Daniel is moved: – In time – In space Susa will be the capital of the Persian Empire 5/8/2016 9

The Ram and the Goat, Verses 3-8 The Ram Later identified as representing the kings of Medo-Persia (v 20), has two horns. First - Media ; Second - Persia Persia comes later and more powerful The dominant kingdoms extend their domain West, North, and South 5/8/2016 10

The Ram and the Goat, Verses 3 The Goat Greece, led by Alexander, conquers Medo-Persia – Alexander dies at age 32/3 (323 B.C.) in Babylon – Four generals battle for control 5/8/2016 11

The “Little Horn”, Verses 9-14 Widely held that this could describe Antiochus IV Epiphanes – Sought to Hellenize the Jews – Stopped temple sacrifices – Forced Jews to worship Zeus or die – See I Macc 41:58 What of Matt. 24:9-21?? 5/8/2016 12

The “Little Horn”, Verses 9-14 Lots of discussion and speculation on: – Stars of heaven – Trampling of the host and stars – The 2300 evenings and mornings (6 years, 3+ months or something else?) Could correspond to Sep 6, 171 B.C. to Dec 25, 165 B.C. Culminating rebellion and the miracle of the long lasting oil -> Festival of Lights and Hanukkah 5/8/2016 13

The “Little Horn”, Verses 9-14 5/8/2016 14 Ways the 2300 days are interpreted 1.2300 days are start at the killing of Onias III till the death of Antiochus (6 years, 136 days) and pre-figure a future desecration of the Temple. 2.2300 actually means 1150 days because the Hebrew word means evening and mornings. Therefore, the period under consideration is 3 years and 68 days based on 360-day Jewish year. 3.2300 actually means years, and looks forward to a future event

Introducing Gabriel, Verses 15-19 Daniel sees, but doesn’t understand Gabriel sent to give him the interpretation – First time an angel is named in the Scripture Vision pertains to the end of time 5/8/2016 15

Meaning of the “Little Horn”, Verses 22-26 Primary focus of v 23-26 is character: – Arrogant, cunning, deceptive – Powerful, but not by and from himself Destroyed by God himself 5/8/2016 16

Daniel’s Response, Verse 27 Daniel, the interpreter of dreams and visions, pays a heavy price for this one! – Directed to keep it to himself – Drained and exhausted for days – Even with the words of Gabriel, he still doesn’t believe it was explained 5/8/2016 17

Take-Aways 18 Daniel could not understand the vision – and neither can we – We want to know about the end times – and God told us – Yet we are not satisfied God revealed this prophecy not that we understand His plan or be able to recognize every event as it is fulfilled, but to reveal to us some of what lies ahead, and to assure us that His purposes and promises will be fulfilled God is in control of the future. If we know Him, we know all we need to know. 5/8/2016
