Seven Dispensations 3/20/2016 4

Covenants: The Backbone of the Bible God is committed to His creation, His human creatures, and to His plans for both God has a covenant with creation from which He will never turn back – His dedication to His world is irrevocable Because of this primary covenant commitment, God has entered into several additional redemptive covenants in order to offer salvation/restoration to His creation & creatures Covenant relationships are at the heart of God’s gracious love story of redemption They structure Biblical revelation from cover to cover, hence our eschatological interest http://www.colsoncenter.org/the- center/columns/indepth/14937-introduction-to-the-covenants 3/20/2016 5

The Four Covenants Impacting Eschatology The Protoevangelium (Adamic) Covenant The Abrahamic Covenant The Davidic Covenant The New Covenant 3/20/2016 6

The Protoevangelium Gen 3:14-15 – The first promise of a Redeemer – The offspring of the woman (Christ) will crush the serpent’s head in a fatal wound (Christ dealt a death blow to Satan’s head at the cross) – The serpent (Satan) will bruise the heel of the offspring of the woman (cause Christ to suffer) Christ is the seed of the woman and fatally crushed Satan at the cross, breaking his rule over mankind and his attempt to hold mankind in the bonds of eternal death 3/20/2016 7

The Abrahamic Covenant First Presentation, Gen 12:1-3 – Abraham’s offspring will be made into a great nation (v2) – All the nations to be blessed through Abraham (v3b) – The nations will be blessed/cursed based on their relationship with Abraham’s seed (v3a) Second Presentation, Gen 15:1-21 – Abraham will have innumerable offspring (v5) – Abraham will live to a good old age (v15) – Abraham’s descendants will spend 400 years in Egypt (v13) – The land is promised with its borders defined (vv18-21) 3/20/2016 8

The Abrahamic Covenant (cont) Third Presentation, Gen 17:1-21 – Nations & kings will come from Abraham (v6) – An everlasting covenant is established with Abraham (v7) – Canaan is given to Abraham’s descendants forever (v8) – Circumcision is given and required as a sign of the covenant (v10) – The covenant will be through the line of Isaac (vv19-21) Presentation of promises made to Ishmael, Gen 16:7- 12; 17:19-21; 21:9-13, 17-20 – Given a place of significance – we should respect his lineage in its contemporary manifestation in Middle East 3/20/2016 9

The Davidic Covenant II Sam 7:11-16 – David would have a son who would succeed him & establish his kingdom (v12) – That son (Solomon) would build the temple (v13a) – Though David’s & his lineage’s sins justified chastening, God’s lovingkindness (hesed) would be forever and the lineage would not be set aside (vv14-15) – David’s house, kingdom, & throne would be established forever (v16) Jesus Christ will ultimately fulfill this promise when He assumes the throne of David as King during the Millennium 3/20/2016 10

The New Covenant Foreseen by Moses, Deut 30:1-10 – After all of your wandering you will return to the Lord (v2a) – You will return to obey the Lord with heart & soul (v2b) – The Lord will bring your captives back to the land from the ends of the earth (v4) – The Lord will change your heart so that you & your descendants will love the Lord with all your heart & soul (v6) – You will again obey the Lord and all His commandments (v8) – The Lord will prosper you abundantly (v9) This regathering will occur @ Christ’s 2 nd coming and include: restoration to the land, a work of grace in the people’s hearts, judgment of Israel’s enemies, and prosperity in the land 3/20/2016 11

The New Covenant (cont) Defined by Jeremiah, Jer 31:31-37 – God will give Israel a new heart & mind – God will put His Law within them & written on their hearts (v33) – God will forgive the nation for its idolatry, unbelief, and rejection of their Messiah when He came to them 1 st time (v34b; Zech 12 & 13) – Israel will not pass away no matter how hard they are pressed or how sinful they may be (vv35-37) 3/20/2016 12

The New Covenant (cont) Established by the Lord during the Last Supper, Mt 26:27-28; Lk 22:20 “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” Shown to be a Superior Covenant over the Law, Heb 8:6-13 “When He said, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete.” 3/20/2016 13

Take-Aways Through covenants, God restores His perfect plan for humankind God’s commitment to this purpose is measured by nothing less than the incarnation and cosmic redemption of His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Jesus is the one who fulfills the covenants and promises of redemption, and shares His victory with us! “And for this reason He (CHRIST) is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” Heb 9:15 3/20/2016 14
