Arab nations become angry with the United States and enact an embargo against selling oil to the USA. A fuel shortage causes the price of gasoline in the USA to go way up. Demand for oil increases steadily throughout the world. SW Asian countries become wealthy & powerful from oil trade. The U.S. supports Israel in the 1973 Arab Israeli War. Oil is discovered in 1908 in SWA.

7 How did oil help the Middle East? How has oil wealth created problems in the Middle East? It has made the Middle East wealthy and powerful. Oil production has made the Middle East a major factor in the world economy and politics. Countries of the Middle East that had large oil deposits were able to raise their standard of living by building schools, roads, hospitals, water and sewage treatment plants, and some provided free medical care for its citizens. Created new jobs. It created a large gap between the rich and the poor. Oil has caused conflict in the region. When workers from countries with a large poor population come to the Gulf region to work, they are often treated as second-class citizens. Countries want more land for more oil
